Role in the wider conflict

Jaol began as a frightened communications officer aboard the Little Bean, captured amid a subspace failure caused by a Spark of Creation fragment. Under pressure, he chose to explain the ship’s damage, restricted holding bay, and captain’s incentives rather than protect secrets he could not defend. His technical curiosity repeatedly overcame fear, making him useful to Zac even before his loyalties changed. (Chapters 451 and 453)

Much later, Jaol faced an ancient barrier with visible horror and reluctance, then openly celebrated when it rejected him and spared him from the test. He nevertheless remained part of the expedition’s support network, warning Zac about dangerous signals and coordinating with Galau and Carl to extract people from a collapsing dimension. His development is practical: he does not become fearless, but keeps doing essential work despite fear. (Chapters 1241, 1248, and 1263)

Appearance and personality

Jaol’s physical appearance is not clearly established. His expressive fear, relief, technical excitement, and continued reliability make him cautious but not cowardly when others depend on his expertise. (Chapters 451, 1241, and 1248)

Abilities and cultivation

As a communications officer, Jaol can interpret artificial signals, communicate across expedition systems, and explain subspace engines, restricted bays, and technological anomalies. No cultivation grade, Dao, class, or combat skill is established. (Chapters 451, 453, and 1241)

Relationships

Jaol shifts from Zac’s hostage to a trusted technical coordinator within allied operations, later working with Galau and Carl on evacuation. (Chapters 451 and 1263)
