Doynes Lionheart

Doynes Lionheart, the Immortal White Lion, is the oldest Lionheart of his era and head of the clan's Council of Elders. He governs Black Lion Castle, guards the clan's traditions and Vermouth's empty tomb, and wields the Demon Spear Luentos for roughly fifty years before his grandson's betrayal ends his life. (Chapters 74–89 and 143–163)

Biography

Nahama, Samar, and Sienna's Legacy

Doynes initially represents the conservative authority of the Lionheart elders. He summons the younger generation to Black Lion Castle, evaluates Eugene and Cyan, receives Kristina at Vermouth's memorial, and preserves secrecy around Eugene's selection as Hero. Although protective of clan relics and hierarchy, he does not forbid Eugene's journey to Samar once Eugene approaches adulthood. During Eward's rebellion, Dominic Lionheart ambushes his grandfather, tears away the arm still holding Luentos, and leaves him mortally wounded. Doynes survives long enough to recognize Eugene as Hamel, accept responsibility for the Black Lions' complacency, and agree to abolish the Bloodline Continuation Ceremony in his will. He dies after asking Eugene to watch over the clan's reform, turning his final authority against a tradition he had defended for most of his 120-year life. (Chapters 74–89 and 143–163)

Appearance and personality

Doynes is more than a hundred years old but has not become physically unsightly or wholly infirm with age; his preserved bearing contributes to the title Immortal White Lion. After Dominic's attack, his face becomes livid and hollow-cheeked, and he can walk only by forcing his failing body onward beneath a uniform that hides the hole in his chest. The corpus does not give a definite hair or eye color. (Chapters 74 and 148–149)

He is dignified, traditional, observant, and capable of revising his judgment under catastrophic evidence. Doynes regards clan continuity and hierarchy as protections against civil conflict, yet admits that peace made the Black Lions arrogant and incompetent. He meets impending death calmly, feels more shame over Dominic's choices than grief for himself, and uses his last influence to begin institutional change rather than protect his own reputation. (Chapters 74–89 and 148–149)

Abilities and powers

Doynes is considered among the continent's strongest living knights despite his age. For about fifty years he controls Luentos, a demonic weapon that blackens blood, attacks the mind, and normally rots human wielders. Through the spear he can invoke Spear Forest, raising dark thorns at known coordinates, but his human use cannot reproduce the Demon King of Cruelty's unrestricted scale and consumes or withers the body channeling it. Dominic must use Doynes's severed arm to activate the technique once, demonstrating both Doynes's unusual compatibility and its physical cost. (Chapters 75, 143, and 163)

Relationships

  • Dominic Lionheart: Dominic is Doynes's grandson and heir to a prestigious martial legacy. His resentment culminates in stabbing Doynes and stealing Luentos. Doynes later wishes Dominic had lived long enough to regret the betrayal, but accepts responsibility for failing to see the rot within his family and order. (Chapters 135, 143, and 148–149)
  • Gilead Lionheart: Doynes is Gilead's senior relative and institutional counterweight. He pressures the patriarch to preserve Lionheart expectations while respecting Gilead's authority over Eugene, and the two jointly keep the Hero's identity and mission secret. (Chapters 74–89)
  • Eugene Lionheart: Doynes evaluates Eugene as a possible heir and later recognizes Hamel within him through the battle witnessed via Luentos. Before death, he accepts Eugene's criticism, asks him to observe the Black Lions' reforms, and agrees to end the continuation ceremony. (Chapters 74–89 and 148–149)
  • Carmen Lionheart: Carmen is a younger elder who respects Doynes's seniority while challenging his institutional caution. After his death she becomes the highest-ranking surviving Lionheart elder, though not automatically the new Council Head. (Chapters 74, 148, and 163)
