Reynolds Dunstan

Reynolds Dunstan is the youngest of the four brothers of Dorm 1987 and a member of the O'Brien Empire's military Dunstan clan. An outgoing magus at the Ernst Institute, he becomes a disciplined officer in the Golden Flame Legion, survives betrayal and enslavement, and chooses a life with Monica among Desri's family. His enduring bond with Linley Baruch, Yale Dawson, and George Walsh carries him from student life to Deityhood and finally into the reunited household in the Infernal Realm. Biography

Ernst Brotherhood and Military Service

Reynolds meets Linley while both are registering at the Ernst Institute. Only eight years old after a year-long journey from the O'Brien Empire, he warmly introduces himself, takes Linley by the hand, and runs with him toward their shared dormitory. His entrance test records high elemental affinity and spiritual essence thirty-two times that of his peers, establishing him as a gifted magus even within an academy built around exceptional talent. In Dorm 1987, Reynolds meets Yale and George and becomes “Fourth Bro” because he is the youngest of the four. His early innocence and open manner make him an easy participant in Yale's jokes, but the group soon develops a bond deeper than ordinary school companionship. When Linley spends eleven days absorbed in carving Awakening From the Dream, Reynolds, Yale, and George erect a tent in the snow, arrange food, and keep watch until he recovers, after which they affirm that they will remain brothers for life. The destruction of the Ernst Institute separates the four and sends Reynolds back to the Dunstan clan. His father requires him to enter the army, a startling path for someone remembered as lively, rebellious, and lazy. Military life nevertheless matures him: Yale observes that Reynolds now looks like a soldier, although drinking with an old friend immediately restores his familiar humor. Even while serving far away, Reynolds remains part of the brotherhood's attempts to protect Linley, including their grief and anger when they believe Linley is to be executed. (Chapters 148, 202)

War, Loss, and the Baruch Circle

After nearly nine years apart, Reynolds reunites with Linley as a tall young man whose straight posture and restrained bearing immediately reveal his years in the army. He has risen from common soldier to senior captain in the elite Golden Flame Legion and commands a personal squad whose members have served beside him for six years. Although he has come to value military life, he plans to leave after completing his ten-year commitment so that he can resume the quieter study of fire magic. (Chapters 232–233, 264)

That plan nearly ends during a scouting mission on the Rohault border. Reynolds senses an ambush, orders an immediate retreat, and repeatedly casts fire spells to slow the pursuers and preserve the lives of his men. At Neil City, Prince Julin refuses to open the gates or send aid, leaving Reynolds's surviving squad to be cut down beneath the walls. Badly wounded and unconscious, Reynolds is taken by enemy soldiers; his family and Linley are then falsely told that he died honorably in battle, concealing the city's abandonment of him. Reynolds survives only to be sold to a slave-trading organization, and the experience aboard its vessel leaves him terrified of entering cities where he might be captured again. After escaping, he deliberately takes isolated routes toward the Anarchic Lands rather than seek help at an urban branch of the Dawson Conglomerate. His caution brings him to Desri's hidden mountain village, where he chooses to remain for Monica even though stronger local youths ostracize and beat him. He refuses to abandon her, begins training more diligently, and proposes marriage despite her family's demand that her husband reach at least the ninth rank. (Chapters 272, 275, 283–284)

Linley's unexpected visit reunites the brothers and changes Reynolds's position in the village. Desri and Pennslyn accept his relationship with Monica, and Linley secures permission for Reynolds to leave the secluded community once each year. Reynolds understands that this freedom and familial acceptance exceed what his own rank could have obtained, but Linley dismisses his gratitude as unnecessary courtesy between brothers. Years later Reynolds reaches the ninth rank as an Arch Magus, and when Desri's household relocates for safety, Reynolds moves with them to Dragonblood Castle, restoring his daily place in Linley's circle. Return to the Restored Family

Nearly two thousand years later, Reynolds is a Demigod and a teacher in the Baruch Empire. Linley's return to Dragonblood Castle brings an emotional reunion, but Reynolds must explain that George and Yale did not die naturally. He recounts the rise of Odin, George's murder, and Yale's spiritual domination and torment. Unable to defeat Odin, Reynolds secretly reached Yale through divine sense and, at Yale's own desperate request, killed him to end his suffering, then carried Yale's final warning that neither surviving brother should seek revenge. Reynolds initially restrains Linley because he believes Odin to be overwhelmingly stronger, but when Linley establishes that he can win, grief turns into an urgent demand that their brothers be avenged. Reynolds watches Linley defeat Odin, then personally strikes and tramples the helpless enemy to vent centuries of anger before yielding the scene to others who also lost family. Afterward, when Linley mourns that he could destroy Odin's body but not erase what happened to Yale, Reynolds stops his drinking and reminds him that his return made even partial justice possible. The later restoration of Yale and George returns all four brothers to one household. Reynolds travels with them from the Yulan continent to the Infernal Realm, where their old forms of address, drinking, teasing, and conversation resume despite their immortal lives. He settles among Linley's family in the Skyrite Mountains, welcomes old acquaintances, and joins the group on excursions through the Infernal Realm. At the story's close, Reynolds, Yale, and George grieve together when Linley vanishes beyond their universe, then rush to embrace him when he reappears. (Chapters 718–719, 721, 731, 735, 738, 806)

Appearance and personality

At eight, Reynolds is half a head shorter than Linley and looks roughly three years younger despite being only a year younger. As an adult he grows to nearly 1.9 meters, wears a plain robe when off duty, and carries himself ramrod-straight with the unmistakable air of a veteran soldier. In uniform he wears the deep-blue armor of the Golden Flame Legion and watches his surroundings with sharp, hawk-like eyes. As a Demigod, he appears in a long black robe with the same intelligent eyes, though age and long experience have made him look slightly older. (Chapters 36, 232, 264, 624)

Reynolds is sociable, humorous, romantic, and habitually relaxed in private, but military duty reveals a disciplined counterpart. He obeys orders, calculates battlefield risks, remains alert while others relax, and takes responsibility for subordinates who have fought beside him for years. His caution after enslavement is not cowardice but a survivor's refusal to accept unnecessary danger. He can also endure humiliation without retaliation when fighting would endanger his chance to remain with Monica, turning patience and renewed training into forms of commitment. His defining loyalty is emotional rather than formal. Reynolds keeps watch over Linley in the snow, leaves military duties when he can reunite with his brothers, and carries Yale's last wishes even when they conflict with his own desire for revenge. He does not conceal grief: reunions bring tears, accounts of George and Yale leave him trembling, and the punishment of Odin releases rage held for centuries. Yet he remains capable of tempering another person's anger and offering comfort after his own vengeance has been taken. (Chapters 88, 232, 624–629)

Abilities and cultivation

Reynolds begins with high elemental affinity and exceptional spiritual essence, measured at thirty-two times the level of children his age. He specializes in fire magic and reaches the seventh rank during his military career. His strong spiritual perception gives him an early sense of approaching danger, while spells such as the sixth-rank Decapitating Inferno let him place successive walls of flame between pursuers and retreating troops. He conserves mageforce under pressure instead of simply casting his strongest available magic, showing an officer's concern for endurance and changing battlefield conditions. (Chapters 36, 264)

His combat ability is strengthened by conventional military experience. Reynolds rises through the Golden Flame Legion from an ordinary soldier to senior captain, commands hundreds of troops, organizes scouts into smaller squads, and keeps his personal unit responsive during an ambush. These skills do not make him a close-combat specialist, and enemy fighters eventually overwhelm him once his mageforce is exhausted, but his decisions give part of the scouting force time to retreat and demonstrate that his authority rests on practiced command rather than noble birth alone. After settling with Desri's household, Reynolds advances from a seventh-rank magus to an Arch Magus of the ninth rank, although he has not yet reached the Saint level when Linley visits the mountain residence. By Linley's return almost two millennia later, Reynolds has become a fire-aligned Demigod capable of using divine sense and training students of his own. His later life emphasizes longevity, teaching, and family companionship more than high-level combat, and the record does not place him among the supreme experts surrounding Linley.
