Burgess welcomes Linley into the secluded community and speaks with open admiration of Leylin, whom he considers the greatest genius he has known. He spars with Linley so that the new God can test his transformed body and developing techniques, while his companion similarly trains with Bebe. Burgess treats the sessions as useful contest rather than lethal rivalry, offers candid commentary, and survives the later upheaval around Adkins and the Necropolis without changing his easy allegiance.
