Tears of a Dark Elf

The Tears of a Dark Elf are paired protective ornaments worn by Felicia and In-gong, best known for resisting mind magic and for responding when the pair’s magical connection is disrupted or restored.

History

Felicia’s gift

Felicia gives In-gong a thin necklace with a crescent-shaped silver ornament and purple gem before his mission to the Enger Plains. The transfer is an outright personal gift made in gratitude and concern for his safety, not a temporary loan. (Chapter 42) In-gong wears it from the beginning of the mission and identifies its purpose as guarding its wearer’s mind. (Chapter 43)

Its first decisive use comes when Mustafa releases a battle cry intended to collapse his opponents’ minds. The jewel shines purple and completely blocks the attack, giving In-gong the opening he needs to continue the fight. Felicia later asks whether her gift helped and is pleased when he confirms that it created his chance to win. (Chapters 49, 53)

The paired warning

Felicia possesses a matching purple ornament, shown first as a necklace and later held on her finger. (Chapters 90, 137) When the Famine Knight drains and blocks the magic of the ruin around Felicia, In-gong’s jewel loses all light. He treats the change as a possible warning that she is in danger, while acknowledging that a broken feature is another possible explanation, and immediately travels to her. (Chapters 137–138)

The paired ornaments remain dark while the Famine Knight’s power obstructs the ruin. Once battle damage opens the ruin and its magic can flow outward again, Felicia’s Tears shines; when In-gong arrives, both ornaments shine together. The sequence demonstrates a magical relationship between the two pieces, but the corpus does not provide a complete rule set for its range or activation. (Chapter 139)

In-gong continues wearing his necklace after the rescue. Felicia keeps the counterpart, and Anastasia explicitly identifies In-gong’s piece as something Felicia gave him. (Chapter 168) It remains part of his defensive equipment even after he receives the overlapping Succubus Tears. (Chapters 175, 184)

Abilities and properties

• Mind-magic defense: The necklace is described as a powerful, even “absolute,” defense against mind magic. It completely blocks Mustafa’s mental attack and makes ordinary enchantment ineffective against In-gong. (Chapters 43, 49, 64, 168)
• Paired response: The two purple ornaments react to the magical condition separating their wearers. Loss of light warns In-gong during Felicia’s crisis, while both pieces shine once the obstruction clears and he reaches her. The evidence supports a connection and warning function, but not unrestricted communication. (Chapters 137–139)
• Overlap with Succubus Tears: The defensive effect overlaps with the mental resistance of Succubus Tears, so wearing both is partly redundant. (Chapter 175)
• Limits: Protecting the mind does not make the whole body immune to hostile power; a zombie dragon’s evil will fails to disturb In-gong’s mind but still arrests his body momentarily. The necklace also cannot by itself defeat Succubus Queen Titania’s exceptional bewitchment, although the additional Succubus Tears lets In-gong avert his eyes. (Chapters 68, 184)
• Non-use does not imply failure: In-gong sometimes withstands mental pressure through his own endurance without needing the necklace’s power. (Chapter 115)
