Quanta

Quanta is an ice dragon from near the Northern Limit Line whom Zephyr defeats and binds with obedience magic. Still restrained afterward, she becomes his mount and a powerful—though coercively subordinated—battlefield asset against other dragons, undead armies, and the red dragon.

Biography

From Captive Dragon to Battlefield Ally

Quanta begins as a feared regional dragon whose anxiety and anger turn into a violent defense of her territory. Zephyr's prepared army forces her into a smaller gandharva form, where he maims, curses, and pins her down before imposing a painful obedience spell; her later service therefore cannot be assumed voluntary. She remains bound, gagged, and blindfolded when Altesia first meets the group, and is still blindfolded later, yet follows Zephyr's commands as mount and combatant. Quanta helps kill Callosa, carries the northern coalition at extreme speed, attacks Shutenberg's undead, blocks a pillar of the red dragon's power with Zephyr, and freezes enemies during the final assault. Her last scene shows her actively fighting, but the postwar corpus does not state what becomes of her captivity or allegiance. (Chapters 174, 183, 195, 203, 210–211, 220–221, and 224–227)

Appearance and personality

In dragon form, Quanta has blue scales, blue eyes, wings, and a body hundreds of meters long. She can shrink into the form of a blue-haired gandharva woman, an appearance the narration calls her usual preference. Her later blindfold and restraints are imposed by Zephyr's faction rather than natural features or clothing choices. (Chapters 174, 183, 195, and 203)

Quanta is initially proud, destructive, and furious at being challenged, but also anxious enough to recognize when she must escape. Her reputation as an “evil dragon” and aerial disaster belongs to the people around the Northern Limit Line. After her forced submission, the text gives little access to her feelings; her silence at Callosa's death and compliance in battle should not be interpreted as friendship, forgiveness, or freely chosen loyalty. (Chapters 174, 183, and 195)

Powers and abilities

Quanta's cold Dragon Breath spreads across dozens of meters, freezes the air, and destroys multiple zombie drakes in one sweep. She later uses it to freeze undead tied to Shutenberg's formation and black beasts near the red dragon. Her huge wings create powerful gusts and provide rapid long-distance transport, though hours of full-speed flight require Felicia and Anastasia to improve her efficiency and restore her strength. (Chapters 174, 210–211, 220, and 227)

Through Dragon Words, Quanta can form defensive magic, scatter projectiles with wind, summon falling icicles, and transform between dragon and gandharva bodies. In gandharva form she reinforces herself with aura and magic, uses Telekinesis, creates a sword from a tooth, and attempts enchantment through her voice. Coordinated attacks, resistance-lowering curses, restraint, and continuous disruption overcome these abilities, allowing Zephyr to prevent her escape and impose obedience. (Chapter 174)

Relationships

  • Zephyr: Zephyr engineers Quanta's capture and forces an obedience spell upon her after deliberately wounding and restraining her. She later carries him and obeys his battle commands, but continuing restraints make their relationship one of coercive subordination rather than an established voluntary partnership. (Chapters 174, 183, 203, 210–211, and 224–227)
  • Altesia: Quanta is already a heavily restrained captive when Altesia joins Zephyr. They subsequently fight within the same force: Altesia's curses help Quanta overpower Callosa, and both contribute to the northern and final campaigns. (Chapters 183, 195, 203, and 211–227)

Items

  • No notable personal item is included in Quanta's finalized inventory. The sword she produces from one of her teeth is an expression of her transformation abilities, while the blindfold, gag, and restraints belong to her captivity rather than her chosen equipment. (Chapters 174 and 183)
