Berkintox

Berkintox is the giant chief of the Paran clan and an apostle of War. Once regarded as a long-serving warrior loyal to the Demon King's Palace, he engineers the betrayal at Curtis and becomes the central military obstacle to Anastasia and In-gong.

Betrayal at Curtis

Berkintox plans the Paran clan's revolt around the trust earned through centuries of service. After the Hwarin destroy the transportation formations, he suppresses information, takes fortresses by surprise, opens Curtis's gates to barbarian forces, and isolates Anastasia while anticipating that Victor will not immediately abandon his position to rescue her. He chooses the rebellion after meeting the person behind the new order and believes the Demon King's Palace can be overthrown; the corpus presents calculated commitment, not proof that War coerced him. When In-gong's counterattack reaches him, Berkintox invokes War's red power and resists the Giant King's Sword's domination, but In-gong pierces and crushes his chest before White Eagle and Black Eagle destroy his heart and vessels. His death is announced on the battlefield, and the rebellion rapidly collapses. (Chapters 158–159, 161–163, and 165–168)

Appearance and personality

Berkintox is explicitly a giant with a huge body. In combat, War's red energy causes that body to swell further, and he wears armor while carrying a sword and shield. The supplied chapters do not establish his hair, eye color, or other distinguishing facial features. (Chapters 158 and 165)

He is reputed to be careful and thoughtful, qualities reflected in the preparation of his betrayal and his effort to manipulate the coalition's response. His rebellion is neither impulsive nor secretly loyal: he knowingly exploits the Paran clan's honorable reputation, accepts atrocities committed during the seizure of Curtis, and commits himself to the promised new order. As a giant and veteran warrior, Berkintox has formidable size, strength, and battlefield experience. He fights with sword and shield, while the red energy of War amplifies him and marks him as War's apostle. That status allows him to oppose the Giant King's Sword's attempt to dominate giants, even as his natural giant instincts respond to it. The precise process by which he became an apostle is not shown, and the wider army's resistance to nightmare magic is not established as a freely usable personal technique of Berkintox.
