Little Shadow

Little Shadow is a sentient shadow-being who merges with Xu Qing’s shadow after emerging from a black-scaled wolf. It can speak imperfectly, make choices, feel fear and jealousy, seek praise and freedom, and form independent relationships. Although Xu Qing initially seals, suppresses, and commands it, those custody conditions do not make Little Shadow an item or erase its personhood. (Chapters 13–14, 117, 172, 248, 490, 544, 969)

Biography

The wolf shadow and forced suppression

During Squad Thunderbolt’s battle with black-scaled wolves, a dead wolf’s distorted shadow moves into Xu Qing and fills him with an evil presence. The violet crystal in his chest reacts, engulfs the intruder, and fuses it with his ordinary shadow. The resulting being absorbs mutagen that would otherwise accumulate in Xu Qing, but he immediately recognizes the transformed shadow as an unknown danger rather than a technique he intentionally created. As its strength grows, the shadow begins moving without Xu Qing’s direction. He uses the violet crystal to suppress it repeatedly, establishing a coercive custodial relationship before either side can communicate clearly. On the Merfolk Isles it wakes enough to extinguish a Spirit Breath Lamp twice, struggles against Xu Qing’s control, and stops only after repeated crushing. Its annoyance, resistance, and response to punishment are early evidence of an awakening mind. (Chapters 76, 80, 107, 117)

When Little Shadow later attacks and attracts the giant pulling the dragon chariot, Xu Qing tries to erase it with hundreds of suppressions. It hides, returns as a tiny kowtowing person, cries, pleads, and accepts three months to prove its usefulness. The scene is not a voluntary pact between equals: Xu Qing retains the violet crystal’s power over it, while Little Shadow acts from fear, survival instinct, and a still-present desire for freedom. (Chapter 172)

Learning speech, scouting, and preference

After its breakthrough, Little Shadow can produce broken words and emotional fluctuations. With Patriarch Golden Vajra Warrior interpreting, it explains that it can devour another person’s entire shadow to control the body, distribute hidden shadow eyes for surveillance, and form a domain that strengthens its powers. Its ability to answer, correct a bad interpretation, and express dislike for the Patriarch shows a person learning communication, not an inert ability being catalogued. (Chapter 172)

Little Shadow begins scouting for Xu Qing through remotely placed eyes and reports discoveries with obvious pleasure. When it finds a target from the First Peak, it asks to be praised, but the Patriarch deliberately omits that part while translating. This petty competition becomes a durable feature of their relationship: Little Shadow seeks recognition, resents the intermediary who manipulates its speech, and performs useful work while developing preferences beyond immediate hunger. (Chapter 248)

Its bond with Xu Qing remains unstable. Little Shadow can obey, fawn, and acknowledge orders, yet it also dislikes confinement and remembers the possibility of replacing or escaping him. Xu Qing lets it devour another shadow only while holding that victim under violet suppression, and Little Shadow grows stronger afterward. Service, appetite, fear, and self-preservation therefore coexist; none alone fully explains its continuing place beside him. (Chapter 282)

Coalition growth and Sea-Sealing County

During the coalition period, Little Shadow continues advancing alongside the Patriarch. It watches his declarations of loyalty closely enough to memorize them for later use, a comic act that also shows learning and social comparison. When both complete partial breakthroughs, Xu Qing conceals them together and evaluates their increased battle value, but the two remain distinct persons: Little Shadow occupies Xu Qing’s shadow while the Patriarch returns to a separate vessel. (Chapter 346)

After Xu Qing survives the god’s finger, Little Shadow admits through its actions that it had hidden and hoped the violet crystal might break, allowing it to become free. When that hope fails, it performs loyalty out of terror and helps attack Sir Inkwell. The Patriarch calls it a traitor, but that accusation is his hostile opinion; the scene itself establishes Little Shadow’s independent wish for survival and release under continuing suppression. (Chapter 490)

Back in the South Phoenix forbidden region where they first merged, Xu Qing gives Little Shadow a bounded area in which to grow. It thanks him, spares scavengers because it anticipates his reaction, devours mutagen and mutant beasts, and transforms plants, animals, and trees into eye-bearing extensions. After occupying a tenth of the region it forces a breakthrough, expands into a 3,000-meter canopy, and says its possession could eventually reach gods. (Chapter 544)

The breakthrough does not end their power imbalance. Xu Qing dismisses its first explanation, orders it back, and Little Shadow returns trembling. Ling’er then praises its effort, prompting gratitude and playful shapes from a being accustomed only to coldness. This moment gives Little Shadow a relationship not defined solely by control: Ling’er’s warmth matters to it, and her approval visibly changes its emotional state. (Chapter 544)

Moonrite work and rescue

In the Moonrite Region, Little Shadow often leaves the Green Spirit Pharmacy for days at a time to hunt research subjects for Xu Qing. Ling’er notices and misses its help when assigning the Patriarch a violent errand, while the Patriarch resents that Little Shadow has already learned to seek her favor. These absences show trusted independent fieldwork within the group, even though Xu Qing can still call and sense it across distance. (Chapters 582, 587)

That freedom carries real risk. Cathedral cultivators pin Little Shadow to a white plant with a bronze dagger, drain it through parasitic dandelions, and torment it to lure Xu Qing. Little Shadow cries for help and becomes excited when he approaches; Xu Qing closes the pharmacy, tracks their connection into the storm, and comes to recover it. The episode demonstrates reciprocal concern without pretending the earlier coercion never happened. (Chapter 587)

Afterward, Little Shadow defends Ling’er when a parrot abuses her and continues serving as Xu Qing’s remote observer. It identifies Li Youfei by reproducing his shape and maintains a shadow eye on him long enough to establish that he has not betrayed Xu Qing. The work combines surveillance mechanics with judgment over time, making Little Shadow important to investigations as well as direct combat. (Chapter 589)

Imperial capital, Holy Lands, and ascension conflict

In the imperial-capital investigation, Xu Qing orders Little Shadow to spread over an entire mountain range and locate anyone concealed there. It immediately possesses the birds and beasts throughout the area, closing escape routes while he traces a hidden cultivator through life-force connections. The scale of the operation shows how its earlier shadow-eye and possession abilities have developed into wide-area reconnaissance and environmental control. (Chapter 789)

Little Shadow also assists with poison and large battles. Xu Qing sometimes lets it devour dangerous toxins, but he retains other disposal methods when a poison is unsuitable. Against holy-land enemies, Little Shadow takes over ghost-face centipedes and makes the swarm emit black flames and poisonous gas, preventing Lan Yao from interfering. Its effectiveness depends on available shadows, creatures, mutagen, and the strength of the opponent. (Chapters 890, 917)

Its emotions remain independent during these campaigns. When told to guard a mysterious bubble, Little Shadow feels indignant that the god vine has overtaken its perceived standing with Xu Qing; nevertheless, it watches carefully and urgently warns him when a cosmic disturbance begins. Later, Floating Fiend’s overwhelming attack makes Little Shadow wail and breaks through every defense, proving that it can be hurt and that its protection has hard limits against Imperial Sovereign power. (Chapters 969–980)

Fifth Star Ring and return to Revered Ancient

Xu Qing’s godly state continues to terrify Little Shadow, which trembles when his human nature is stripped away. Even so, it accompanies him into the Fifth Star Ring and searches for a True Goddess again after the ascendees’ devastating first clash. Later it uses local mutagen to cover Xu Qing so completely that only a True God should notice him, combining its oldest affinity with mutagen and its mature concealment abilities. (Chapters 1023, 1249, 1262)

Little Shadow’s last explicit status is conveyed through Mount Daybreak’s hierarchy. Patriarch Golden Vajra Warrior gains a corporeal body and becomes the mountain’s steward, powerful enough to exercise authority everywhere else, yet Little Shadow remains the sole person there who can challenge him. The comparison preserves Little Shadow’s continued agency and rank in Xu Qing’s household rather than reducing it to equipment left behind after the wars. (Chapter 1339)

Appearance and personality

Little Shadow has no single stable body. It begins as a distorted wolf-born shadow fused with Xu Qing’s own, later forms a tiny kowtowing person and an eye-covered tree, and can expand into a vast black canopy. Its manifested territory produces eyes, coffin-like trees, possessed beasts, and shadowy mouths; it can also twist into recognizable shapes to communicate information. (Chapters 13–14, 172, 544, 589)

It is hungry, fearful, cunning, jealous, eager for praise, and capable of loyalty. Little Shadow often flatters Xu Qing because disobedience has been violently punished, but it also independently spares scavengers, protects Ling’er, warns of danger, and repeatedly accepts hazardous fieldwork. Its wish for freedom and resentment toward newer favorites do not cancel its attachments; they make those attachments more complex and recognizably personal. (Chapters 248, 490, 544, 589, 969)

Its speech remains fragmented for much of the story, causing others—especially the Patriarch—to interpret its words. That limitation creates opportunities for manipulation but does not indicate low personhood. Little Shadow corrects misunderstandings, remembers phrases, sends detailed images and emotional fluctuations, and eventually recovers its mental faculties enough to compare its social standing with that of other companions. Abilities and cultivation

Mutagen absorption and environmental spread

Little Shadow absorbs mutagen from Xu Qing and from forbidden regions, initially protecting him from mutation while feeding its own growth. At higher levels it spreads across terrain, devours mutated plants and beasts, and converts surviving forms into eye-bearing or coffin-like extensions of its presence. This expansion is powerful but not limitless: it becomes overfull, requires breakthroughs, and can be injured by specialized suppression. (Chapters 14, 80, 544, 587)

Shadow devouring and possession

By consuming an entire target’s shadow, Little Shadow can control the target’s body. Later it possesses many birds, beasts, and ghost-face centipedes at once, using their bodies and innate emissions to search or block enemies. Its claim that it can possess gods is explicitly qualified as an eventual capability; the corpus does not show it freely controlling a resisting True God. (Chapters 172, 282, 544, 789, 917)

Shadow eyes, scouting, and concealment

Little Shadow can hide remote eyes in other shadows and send Xu Qing visual or emotional reports. It uses them to find poisonous creatures, track suspects, and maintain surveillance over long distances. By combining its cover with ambient mutagen, it can conceal Xu Qing from detection below the True God level, though that threshold is Xu Qing’s own assessment rather than proof of absolute invisibility. (Chapters 172, 248, 589, 1249, 1262)

Domain and defensive limits

Within a spread-out shadow domain, Little Shadow’s abilities become stronger and its many eyes can coordinate control across a broad area. Bright or suppressive artifacts can trouble it, the violet crystal can crush and restrain it, a blood-coated bronze dagger can pin it, and overwhelming cultivation attacks can make it wail or render its defense useless. These limits distinguish a powerful developing companion from an invulnerable authority. (Chapters 117, 172, 587, 980)

• Xu Qing: Their relationship begins when the violet crystal seals Little Shadow into Xu Qing’s shadow. He suppresses and commands it, later entrusts it with independent missions and comes to rescue it. Fear, coercion, reliance, protection, and long companionship all remain part of the bond. • Patriarch Golden Vajra Warrior: The Patriarch first translates Little Shadow’s broken speech, sometimes deliberately mistranslating or denigrating it.
