Grandmaster Bai — Beyond the Timescape

Grandmaster Bai is Xu Qing’s first medicine teacher and one of the defining benefactors of his childhood. He appears in the scavenger camp as an elderly mortal physician, teaches Xu Qing plants and pillcraft, and is later revealed to have been one of the countless incarnations of Immortal Lord Dark Alchemist of the Fifth Star Ring. He is distinct from Bai Xiaozhuo, the Sea-Sealing County lieutenant governor.

Biography

Physician of the scavenger camp

Grandmaster Bai enters the camp as a respected traveling physician from the Violet Lands. When Squad Thunderbolt brings the injured Sergeant Thunder to him, he diagnoses old damage, suppressed mutagen, and a condition that renewed cultivation would make fatal. He identifies a lifespan flower as the rare possibility for recovery, giving Xu Qing both an honest prognosis and the concrete knowledge that drives the boy into danger searching for medicine. (Chapters 18–21)

Xu Qing begins listening outside Grandmaster Bai’s lessons because formal education has always been beyond his reach. The grandmaster notices almost immediately. Instead of driving him away, he lectures longer and louder, then lets the boy ask about lifespan flowers. His strict manner preserves the standards of a real class, while the access he quietly creates recognizes hunger for knowledge rather than status, cleanliness, or ability to pay. (Chapters 19–23)

Master Seventh’s interest confirms that Xu Qing is being evaluated from more than one direction. Grandmaster Bai sees through the boy’s transparent excuses for returning with random plants and argues that Seven Blood Eyes would waste a promising academic, yet he continues teaching. His disagreement with Master Seventh is not opposition to Xu Qing’s future; it is a claim that scholarship and cultivation should strengthen one another rather than forcing the child to choose. Before leaving, Grandmaster Bai encodes the guarded white-bolus formula across earlier lessons and gives Xu Qing enough guidance to reconstruct it. The formula offers livelihood as well as medicine, breaking rules that reserve such knowledge for clans and institutions. He also leaves a medicinal codex and a promise that the living may meet again, making the farewell a lesson in continuity that Xu Qing carries long after hearing of his teacher’s death. Rediscovery beyond Revered Ancient

For much of Xu Qing’s later life, Grandmaster Bai survives as memory: the teacher whose death cannot be repaired, whose plant lore shapes Xu Qing’s poisons and treatments, and whose words define the novel’s title. In the higher star rings, however, contradictions appear. Questions about why he was in Revered Ancient, why he died there, and how his will could exist within a world formed from Immortal Lord Aurora reveal that the mortal biography was only one part of a larger existence. The later identification of Grandmaster Bai as an incarnation of Immortal Lord Dark Alchemist resolves the continuity without making him Immortal Lord Aurora. (Chapters 1141, 1193, 1285)

Those revelations do not erase the camp teacher. The will and memories Xu Qing encounters remain recognizably Grandmaster Bai, and their connection is still grounded in the lessons the boy overheard outside a tent. The immortal context reframes his apparent death as the death of one incarnation whose memories and teacher–student bond continue within Immortal Lord Dark Alchemist; it does not merge him with Aurora or with the unrelated lieutenant governor Bai Xiaozhuo. Grandmaster Bai waits seven years outside a rift for Xu Qing to complete his return. When Xu Qing emerges amid immortal fluctuations, the teacher greets him simply and asks to take a walk. Xu Qing follows half a step behind, preserving the etiquette of their earliest relationship even though both can now walk through starry space and time beyond the perception of ordinary cultivators. Their conversation joins old stories, current events, and future possibility rather than repeating a beginning that no longer exists. At the Fourth Star Ring’s border, Grandmaster Bai gives Xu Qing a seed to carry toward people connected with the past and a lamp made through plant methods around a God Paragon’s eye. The gifts extend his teaching into responsibilities Xu Qing must interpret and complete on his own. (Chapters 1306–1307)

Canon, entropy, and the final return

Grandmaster Bai’s later instruction helps Xu Qing understand that immortal conflict is fundamentally a struggle of canon expressed through techniques and daos. This is an enlargement of the same intellectual discipline he taught in the camp: phenomena must be observed, classified, combined under known rules, and tested against limits. Plant scholarship becomes a language capable of addressing immortality rather than being discarded as low-level knowledge. (Chapters 1306–1318)

The lamp demonstrates that principle materially. Grandmaster Bai uses special plant and vegetation methods to build a vessel around the eye of the Fifth Star Ring’s God Paragon, retaining an authority associated with entropy—the transformation of structure between order and chaos. It is an extraordinary containment achievement, not evidence that every recipient automatically controls a God Paragon’s complete power. (Chapters 1307, 1324)

After giving the seed and lamp, Grandmaster Bai departs instead of accompanying Xu Qing into Revered Ancient’s war. Xu Qing later activates the treasure as part of his own return and defense, making the teacher’s preparation consequential without transferring authorship of Xu Qing’s choices. The farewell fulfills the early promise that they could meet again and preserves teaching as a relationship that ends in entrusted independence. (Chapters 1307, 1318, 1324)

Appearance and personality

In the scavenger camp, Grandmaster Bai appears as a white-haired old physician whose calm gaze can feel imposing. He is famously sharp-tongued, strict with apprentices, and intolerant of careless recall, yet Master Seventh accurately observes that the severity conceals a compassionate disposition. He lengthens lessons for an eavesdropping child and breaks institutional convention to transmit valuable knowledge. (Chapters 18–24, 29)

His later presence retains that kindness while carrying immortal scale. He can wait years without complaint and greet Xu Qing with quiet familiarity, valuing a walk and conversation over spectacle. Grandmaster Bai’s defining trait is disciplined generosity: he gives diagnoses without false hope, knowledge without condescension, and treasures with responsibilities and limitations attached. Abilities and cultivation

Medicine and diagnosis

Grandmaster Bai can identify injuries, mutagen interactions, cultivation damage, and possible treatments through close examination. His diagnosis of Sergeant Thunder distinguishes immediate wounds from old internal damage and explains why normal breathing exercises would be fatal. He treats patients in the camp while training assistants, showing practical medicine as a repeatable discipline rather than a single miraculous cure. (Chapters 18–23)

Plants, pillcraft, and instruction

His scholarship covers medicinal plants, poisonous interactions, preparation ratios, refining temperatures, and protected formulas. Grandmaster Bai teaches through testing and connected lessons, expecting students to understand relationships rather than memorize isolated names. The white-bolus formula demonstrates his ability to encode information across a curriculum so that a worthy student can reconstruct knowledge he is constrained from stating directly. Immortal canon and incarnations

As Immortal Lord Dark Alchemist, Grandmaster Bai sends countless incarnations through the star rings to seek the will of the dao; the physician Xu Qing knew in Revered Ancient was one of them. In his later state, he can move through starry space and time in a manner perceptible only to Summer Immortals and can explain canon-level conflict. The medicinal-vessel imagery inside Aurora’s world is part of the mystery surrounding that incarnation, not evidence that Grandmaster Bai and Immortal Lord Aurora are the same being. (Chapters 1141, 1285, 1306–1318)

Grandmaster Bai refines a God Paragon’s eye into a lamp using methods related to plants and vegetation. The vessel preserves part of the eye’s godly authority over entropy and can bring terrifying force to later conflict. The feat shows containment, material transformation, and immortal medicine operating together; it does not mean Grandmaster Bai becomes the God Paragon or that the lamp lacks activation limits. Relationships

Xu Qing: Grandmaster Bai recognizes Xu Qing’s hunger for knowledge, becomes his medicine teacher, and reunites with him as an immortal before entrusting him with later responsibilities. (Chapters 18–30, 1306–1324)
