Lin Yan

Lin Yan is a famously impatient Inner Academy fighter whose debt to Xiao Yan grows into durable friendship. First encountered while suffering from accumulated fire poison, he later becomes one of Xiao Yan's most forthright defenders, follows him into the Jia Ma Empire, and reunites with him in the Central Plains as a Dou Huang. Biography

Fire poison and Pan's Gate

Long retreats in the Blazing Sky Qi Refining Tower leave Lin Yan with fire poison tangled through his Dou Qi and his temper close to breaking point. When Xiao Yan identifies the condition, Lin Yan agrees to exchange a Green Wood Celestial Vine for treatment. Ice Spirit Pills and Marrow Washing Cold Spirit Liquid suppress and then remove the poison, and Lin Yan insists that the transaction does not settle the value of his life: he still owes Xiao Yan a favor. (Chapters 483–484, 492, 522)

He begins repaying that debt before the cure is complete. Lin Yan offers to watch over Pan's Gate during Xiao Yan's retreat and later arrives with his Distant Fire Axe when the White Gang threatens the new faction, openly placing himself between the attackers and Xiao Yan's people. Once the poison is gone, his manner becomes calmer and his strength rises; he finishes the Strong Ranking Grand Competition in fourth place and eventually serves as an Inner Academy elder. During the later battle around Feng City, he, Lin Xiuya, and Liu Qing jointly delay an elite Dou Huang. (Chapters 484, 497, 522, 580, 641)

Following Xiao Yan west

By the time Xiao Yan prepares to return to the Jia Ma Empire, Lin Yan no longer treats their bond as a bargain. He brings Xiao Yan to the arena where Lin Xiuya and Liu Qing volunteer for the expedition, explaining that he had already expected to go himself. He then leaves Jia Nan Academy beside Xiao Yan, Zi Yan, Lin Xiuya, and Liu Qing, accepting a war against the Misty Cloud Sect that has no direct connection to his own family or advancement. The journey lasts two months and ends at Zhen Gui Pass, where Lin Yan and the other academy companions enter an unfamiliar political conflict under Xiao Yan's leadership. He remains with the returning coalition through its confrontation with the Misty Cloud Sect and is among the allies Xiao Yan leads into the Primer clan manor after breaking the attack on it. His conduct marks the completed change from a volatile creditor into a companion willing to cross regions for a friend's unfinished struggle. (Chapters 674, 677, 689)

Four Pavilion Grand Meeting and the Middle Region

After the Misty Cloud conflict, Lin Yan, Lin Xiuya, and Liu Qing leave the Jia Ma Empire to train independently. Xiao Yan next finds Lin Yan competing at the Four Pavilion Grand Meeting as a four-star Dou Huang. Lin Yan's new, awkward-looking movement technique carries him deep into the mass elimination despite stronger opponents; when Wang Chen attacks after Lin Yan has conceded, Xiao Yan intervenes, and Lin Yan immediately stands beside him when the Wind Lightning Pavilion threatens retaliation. Lin Yan then travels with Xiao Yan through the Middle Region, supplies practical knowledge about its factions and Wormholes, and guides him toward Liu Qing's Tianhuang City. His caution remains personal rather than ceremonial: he repeatedly warns Xiao Yan not to expose the Burning Flame Valley's Skyfire Three Mysterious Change, anxiously follows his dangerous visit to the valley, and volunteers to help search for the injured Little Fairy Doctor. He accepts Xiao Yan's refusal only after recognizing that his own Dou Huang strength would be a liability against the Ice River Valley. (Chapters 1033–1045, 1065–1066)

Appearance and personality

Lin Yan is introduced in gray clothes, with eyes reddened by the fire poison accumulated in his body. Academy students call him “crazy” and regard him as the least patient person in the Inner Academy; his first conversation with Xiao Yan confirms the reputation, as fear about his condition repeatedly turns into anger. The poison's removal visibly softens that agitation, though not his blunt speech or appetite for confrontation. (Chapters 483–484, 522)

His defining virtue is that his harsh manner does not excuse him from a promise. He guards Pan's Gate because he said he would, refuses to treat the medicinal exchange as full repayment for his life, and later tries to accompany Xiao Yan into danger even when the difference in strength makes that help impractical. His concern usually appears as warnings, curses, or an offer to fight rather than as polished reassurance. (Chapters 492, 497, 667, 1021, 1045, 1066)

Abilities and cultivation

Axe combat and Dou Qi

Lin Yan fights with the five-foot, red-colored Distant Fire Axe, using the weapon in the direct, forceful style suggested by his “Crazy Axe” reputation. He is already a peak Dou Ling around the time of his treatment, rises from the lower end of the Strong Ranking to fourth after the poison is removed, and later becomes an Inner Academy elder. By the Four Pavilion Grand Meeting he is explicitly a four-star Dou Huang. (Chapters 497, 510, 522, 580, 641, 1020)

His academy record shows both his strength and its limits. Lin Yan can deter ordinary Strong Ranking factions by appearing, and as part of a three-person elder team he can delay a Dou Huang, but that opponent still leaves all three in a miserable condition. The early fire poison is also a direct consequence of overtraining in the tower, demonstrating that his determination can damage his judgment as well as strengthen him. (Chapters 483–484, 497, 641)

Central Plains movement technique

During his independent travels, Lin Yan acquires an unnamed agility Dou Technique that looks ungainly—Xiao Yan compares the motion to a duck swaying—but is exceptionally effective. It lets a four-star Dou Huang survive the Four Pavilion meeting's chaotic elimination until only eleven competitors remain and narrowly shift a fatal strike away from a vital point. It does not erase the power gap against Wang Chen, who still wounds and nearly kills him after he concedes. (Chapters 1019–1021)

• Xiao Yan: Xiao Yan cures his fire poison in return for a medicinal ingredient, but Lin Yan treats the life-saving help as a debt beyond the transaction. He protects Pan's Gate, follows Xiao Yan west, and remains a candid friend when they reunite in the Central Plains. (Chapters 483–484, 492, 497, 667–670, 1019–1021, 1066)

• Liu Qing: A former Strong Ranking peer who becomes a battlefield ally. Lin Yan later knows Liu Qing's home region and guides Xiao Yan to the Liu clan's seat in Tianhuang City. (Chapters 492, 597, 641, 1041–1042)
