Scales of Destiny

The Scales of Destiny are a divine construct controlled by Kaelios, the God of Destiny. They first judge whether Alex Rogue is worthy of Kaelios's blessing, then become the ritual focus for activating the Garden of Destiny during the Chosen Games. Each battlefield invocation consumes substantial Destiny Points and depends on a randomized Wheel of Destiny task whose conditions may already have been satisfied—or may prove impossible before an enemy destroys the manifestation. (Chapters 250, 471, 488–489, 494)

History

Blessing trial

A massive golden scale descends outside Kaelios's monument after Alex completes his Tier 7 advancement task. Alex and Kaelios stand on opposite platforms while Kaelios transfers and links his power to his chosen. The Scales judge Alex's destiny, future, and potential, accept him as worthy, and settle into perfect balance when the blessing transfer succeeds. Custody is never transferred to Alex; he is the subject of Kaelios's ritual. (Chapter 250)

First Chosen Games invocation

Kaelios later explains that battlefield use summons the Wheel of Destiny, which selects a random task; only completing that task permits the Garden of Destiny to manifest. During the fight against Veyrion and Nocturne, Kaelios spends 200 Destiny Points to call down the Scales. Alex must protect the wheel from interruption while it spins, leaving both partners vulnerable and Kaelios with only twelve points. (Chapters 471, 487–488)

Successful domain reversal

The first task requires Kaelios or Alex to injure an enemy severely enough to amputate a limb. Because Alex had already vaporized Veyrion's leg, the system treats the condition as complete from the battle's beginning. The resulting Garden of Destiny clashes with the existing Darkness Domain rather than simply overwriting it, showing that successful judgment enables Kaelios's domain but does not guarantee uncontested control. (Chapters 488–489)

Second invocation and destruction

Alex asks Kaelios to use the Scales again against Lich and Nocteron despite the cost. Kaelios summons the construct for another 200 Destiny Points, but the Wheel demands that he or Alex kill an opponent. Before they can meet that condition, Nocteron applies Necrotic Touch and crumbles both the scale and wheel into golden dust. The scene establishes destruction of that summoned manifestation, not whether the divine ability could ever create another. (Chapters 493–494)

Abilities and properties

  • In its blessing function, the Scales assess destiny, future, and potential and reject or accept the candidate for Kaelios's linked power. The transfer exhausts Alex enough that he loses consciousness afterward. (Chapter 250)
  • In battle, summoning the Scales costs Kaelios 200 Destiny Points. A Wheel of Destiny then chooses an unpredictable task, and the associated domain can activate only if the system judges that task complete. Kaelios cannot prepare for a specific result because the wheel continually changes. (Chapters 471, 488, 494)
  • Task completion can be retroactive to the beginning of the current battle. The first documented combat task succeeds because Alex had already amputated an opponent's limb before the wheel stopped, but the second demands a kill that has not occurred. The variability makes the construct a high-cost gamble rather than a guaranteed reversal. (Chapters 489, 494)
  • A successful ritual manifests the Garden of Destiny, but an equal-ranked hostile domain produces a domain clash. The physical manifestation is also vulnerable to direct interference: Nocteron destroys the second scale and wheel with Necrotic Touch before the task can be fulfilled. (Chapters 489, 494)
