Wylie
Wylie is a veteran legionnaire who helps Eryk survive the transition from recruit to field soldier. His patience with instruction contrasts with a guarded, observant approach to duty and intelligence work. (Chapters 7, 17, 21, 92, 267, 299)
Biography
Training a new soldier
Wylie helps escort Eryk to Castile’s company and teaches him how to ride. When Firth pushes Eryk through a punishing canter, Wylie explains that the veteran is not cruel and will let him recover before doing it again. He then accompanies Eryk on the road and explains the company’s purpose and its risks, helping the recruit understand the life he has entered. (Chapters 7, 17, 21)
Wylie’s support remains practical. He carries gear when the company needs it, advises on weapons and travel, and watches how soldiers respond to changing assignments. When Eryk returns to the Citadel, Wylie meets him at the gate, scolds the guards for failing to question a stranger, then walks Eryk to Castile. His suspicion reflects the danger of infiltration rather than a lack of trust in Eryk personally. (Chapters 18–20, 92)
Service after the company’s separation
Wylie remains active through the wars and the Labyrinth, helping the company navigate military and political uncertainty. After the Emperor’s fall, he travels east with the survivors and later rides back toward the Empire, apparently carrying information to Firth. Castile subsequently hears that Wylie has joined the Hounds with Firth. His reasons and duties are not yet clear, but his movement reconnects him with the intelligence network that had shaped his earlier work. (Chapters 180, 243, 267, 299)
Appearance and personality
Wylie is an experienced soldier with an alert, cautious manner. He can be patient with a struggling recruit, but is uncompromising about guard procedures and the need to question unfamiliar people. (Chapters 7, 92)
Magic and abilities
Wylie’s demonstrated strengths are military: riding instruction, scouting, guard duty, and practical judgment. (Chapters 7, 17, 92, 267)
