Veronica
Veronica is the Duchess who intervenes when Duke Octavian threatens Castile’s company after the fall of Macha. She uses her authority to hold a tribunal and later assigns Castile’s company to a long survey that keeps it away from Octavian’s immediate reach. (Chapters 59–69, 79–85)
Biography
The Ducal Tribunal
Veronica calls a Ducal Tribunal to prevent Octavian from punishing Castile immediately after the company leaves Macha. Her decision gives Castile a formal hearing rather than leaving her at the mercy of the duke’s soldiers. Veronica then takes part in the proceedings and helps ensure that the charges are handled through the Empire’s political institutions. (Chapters 59–69)
After the hearing, Veronica gives Castile and her company a survey assignment in a distant province. The work serves the Duchess’s own political goals while also giving Castile’s company time away from Octavian. Her decision gives the soldiers a new mission and reshapes the company’s route through the Empire. (Chapters 79–85)
A continuing political presence
Veronica’s authority remains relevant when Castile’s company encounters later political problems. The text presents her as a powerful noble with a reputation for protecting her province and managing disputes, though her later references are often through Castile or other officials rather than direct scenes. (Chapters 92–106, 123–133, 245–247, 265, 269, 299)
Appearance and personality
Veronica is presented as a composed and politically capable Duchess. She can be reassuring when speaking with soldiers, but she also uses assignments and hearings to pursue the interests of her province. (Chapters 67–69, 79–85)
Magic and abilities
The story establishes Veronica’s political authority, not personal spellcasting. Her influence comes from her title, her control of provincial resources, and her ability to convene a tribunal and assign military work. (Chapters 59–69, 79–85)
