Rhuuk
Rhuuk is a powerful Boutan warlord whose interests collide with Maveith’s effort to find and free his sister. His tattoos make him an exceptional fighter, and his expertise in the Caliphate’s trials gives him an advantage over the rival cleric Mynasha. (Chapters 290–317)
Biography
Warlord and owner of slaves
Rhuuk first enters the story through reports about the goliath women Myra and Zorana, whom he purchased from pirate slavers. His position as a warlord makes him difficult for Maveith and Eryk to approach directly, so their search for the sisters becomes tied to the Caliphate’s political contest and to finding out whether Rhuuk is in the capital. (Chapters 234, 290–302)
When Eryk reaches the city, he learns that Rhuuk serves as First to Cleric Jhuarkasha and is known for his treatment of slaves. Eryk sees Rhuuk and Jhuarkasha riding together, confirming that the man holding Zorana is now participating in the Choosing. Rhuuk later appears at the trial site with Jhuarkasha, healthy and observant as the other candidates arrive. (Chapters 303–304, 307, 310–311)
The dungeon trial
Rhuuk’s combat preparation gives his side an advantage in the third trial. Glasha explains that he has trained for years to fight the four demons in the dungeon. During the descent, Eryk watches him conserve aether and fight through lesser enemies while carrying two companions; his tattoo magic has a range of effects, but repeated use consumes the reserves he needs for the deeper battle. (Chapters 314–316)
Rhuuk dies during the dungeon fight after spending aether on tattoo magic and fighting through the deeper chambers. His death shocks Jhuarkasha and ends the warlord’s role in the contest before the Supreme decision is resolved. The man who had trained for years to face the demons is overcome in the very trial where that expertise was supposed to give his side an advantage. (Chapters 316–318)
The narrative later treats Rhuuk’s runic equipment as spoils from the encounter. His death also removes the strongest support Jhuarkasha has brought into the Choosing, changing the balance of the remaining contest. The account does not show Rhuuk’s own motives beyond his role as a warlord and First, so his strategic preparation is clearer than any private ambition. (Chapters 321, 328)
Appearance and personality
Rhuuk is a physically formidable warlord with five tattoos and a reputation as one of the Caliphate’s best warriors. His actions show strategic patience in conserving aether, as well as an aggressive role in the political contest. (Chapters 308, 313–316)
Magic and abilities
Rhuuk’s five tattoos grant strength, speed, stamina, self-healing, and toughness; the toughness tattoo fortifies his organs and skin. He is among the few warlords able to activate individual tattoos, allowing him to manage their use rather than triggering all effects at once. He also fights with a broadsword and has extensive experience against the dungeon demons. (Chapters 308, 314–316)
