Pavel
Pavel is a quiet legionnaire and skilled archer who serves alongside Eryk through the company’s early campaigns. He helps defend the group during the city crisis and later joins the company’s dungeon expedition, where he dies trying to give Benito and Lirkin a chance to escape. (Chapters 25, 51–58, 145–180)
Biography
Archer in the company
Pavel is introduced as one of the company’s archers, practicing with Regis on the city wall. He later joins search and patrol groups, and his keen sense of smell makes him a useful companion: while the others tease Eryk about perfume, Pavel confirms that he can detect a faint scent. His work is usually practical rather than showy, fitting the company’s steady reliance on its archers. (Chapters 25, 39–47)
During the defense of the city, Pavel remains with the company through several dangerous transitions. He helps watch the aqueduct after sustaining a leg injury, participates in the desperate push toward the portal, and is later found resting in the Legion Hall after the survivors regroup. Castile allocates him runic arrows with the company’s other top archers, recognizing his value in battle. (Chapters 51–61, 67, 122)
Lost in the Labyrinth
Pavel joins the party sent into the Shimmering Labyrinth. When the expedition splits, he is assigned to Lucien’s team with Benito and Lirkin. The team does not return with the others, and the survivors are forced to consider that they have been lost. Eryk later finds a legionnaire’s body beneath the wreckage of the tavern and assumes it is Pavel, though he cannot confirm the identity. (Chapters 145–146, 172–180)
The company’s later recollection treats Pavel’s death as an act of sacrifice: he and Lucien gave their lives so Benito and Lirkin could survive. Eryk remembers him as a pious man who rarely spoke about himself. (Chapter 180)
Appearance and personality
Pavel is a company archer with a good nose and a quiet manner. The narrative offers little personal history, but Eryk remembers his religious devotion and his willingness to remain at his post despite injury. (Chapters 45, 58, 180)
Magic and abilities
Pavel is an experienced archer. Castile assigns him runic arrows for the company’s defense, and he carries a bow while helping keep watch. No personal spellcasting or numeric combat score is documented. (Chapters 51, 58, 122)
