Lucien
Lucien—also called Lucian in the narration—is the company’s horse master, a patient instructor whose knowledge helps Eryk learn to ride and care for mounts. He is a steady presence through the company’s campaigns and dies in the Shimmering Labyrinth while helping Benito and Lirkin escape. (Chapters 6, 9–13, 40–61, 92–107, 142–180)
Biography
Teaching Eryk to ride
After Eryk falls from a horse during training, Castile sends him to Lucien for further instruction. Lucien teaches him to ride properly and makes clear that Eryk’s lessons will continue until he can stay on a horse. His training is demanding but practical, and Eryk later remembers the time Lucien spent patiently explaining everything he needed to know about horses. (Chapters 9, 13, 94–96, 173)
Lucien is also a trusted member of the company. He shares travel duties and joins patrols, contributes to the group’s humor, and tends to the animals. During the company’s long march, his experience helps the soldiers understand how to manage their mounts and pace themselves. (Chapters 40, 43, 60–61, 99–102)
The Labyrinth and his death
Lucien continues to serve after the company begins exploring the Shimmering Labyrinth. He helps build access tunnels and later leads a team into the dungeon with Benito, Pavel, and Lirkin. When the group fails to return, Eryk and the survivors fear the worst. Eryk eventually finds Lucien’s body beneath a troll and closes his eyes, remembering the lessons that had made him a better rider. (Chapters 142, 145–146, 172–180)
Lucien’s death is tied to the survival of Benito and Lirkin. Castile remembers him as a good man who had been forced into a soldier’s life, while Eryk remembers him as a patient teacher and trusted companion. (Chapters 173–180)
