Hound Cato
Hound Cato is an instructor who prepares Eryk’s trainee group for field work. He distributes equipment, teaches practical survival skills, and monitors exercises that test the recruits’ awareness and judgment. (Chapters 213–224)
Biography
Training the recruits
Cato helps lead Eryk’s cohort through the Hound training program. He joins Konstantin in pushing the recruits to keep pace, issues their field equipment with Hearne, and takes part in the first wilderness exercise. The training is designed to show the recruits how quickly mistakes can become dangerous. (Chapters 213–218)
Cato’s lessons include practical use of equipment and poison-tipped arrows. He later checks the trainees’ knowledge of the city and explains how Hounds are expected to remain on watch. Eryk’s observations show that Cato is both an instructor and an active field trainer, moving with the recruits rather than merely lecturing from the barracks. (Chapters 219–224)
Distinguishing the Hound from the Count
The source also names Count Cassius Cato, a First Citizen associated with a villa and with an expedition to the ruins. The chapters do not establish that the Count and Hound Cato are the same person; this page concerns the Hound instructor only. (Chapters 182–183, 246–248)
Appearance and personality
Cato is an active Hound trainer who jokes with Konstantin and is comfortable testing the recruits’ endurance. His methods emphasize practical readiness, equipment competence, and alertness. (Chapters 213–224)
Magic and abilities
Cato’s documented role is Hound training and field instruction, including equipment handling and the use of poisoned arrows. No personal spellcasting or numeric score is established. (Chapters 215, 220, 223)
