Hearne

Hearne is a Hound tracker who teaches Eryk’s trainee group to identify beasts and read the wilderness. His lessons give Eryk a practical bestiary that remains useful long after the training arc, as the Hounds encounter unfamiliar creatures in the field. (Chapters 213–224, 231–238, 248–249)

Biography

Training the new Hounds

Cornelius introduces Hearne as the group’s master tracker and assigns him to teach the recruits about beasts and monstrosities. Hearne is already part of the training operation when Eryk reaches the Hound barracks; he helps issue their equipment and explains that most Hound work happens in the wild. The emphasis is on field readiness, not merely memorizing names. (Chapters 213–215)

Hearne works directly with the trainees during their practical exercises. He lectures them on animal behavior, tests their awareness, and explains how Hounds must remain watchful even when they rest. Eryk’s time with him includes both a formal tracking challenge and advice on how creatures use smell to hunt. (Chapters 219, 222–224)

Lessons applied in the field

After training, Hearne’s instruction continues to shape Eryk’s decisions. Eryk recalls the lessons when assessing a roc, undead, gnoll hunting behavior, werewolves, and other monsters. The creature knowledge is not an independent power for Hearne, but it becomes a practical legacy of his teaching as Eryk survives assignments beyond the abbreviated training period. (Chapters 231–238, 248–249, 277–278, 282, 288, 295)

Appearance and personality

Hearne is presented as a seasoned tracker who is comfortable in the field and attentive to trainee behavior. He demonstrates a watchful Hound’s habits and teaches from practical experience, with his expertise most visible through the breadth of creature knowledge Eryk remembers. (Chapters 214, 219–224)

Magic and abilities

Hearne’s documented skill is tracking and knowledge of beasts and monstrosities. His instruction covers creature senses, habits, and likely behavior; no personal spellcasting or numeric score is established. (Chapters 213–224)
