Xuemei's Plum-Blossom Mask

Xuemei's plum-blossom mask is the blood-colored face covering worn by Xuemei, marked with the flower that becomes part of her public image as the Devilwitch. It conceals her features but has no demonstrated transformation, combat, or sealing power of its own. During the Blood Master trial, Du Lingfei temporarily appears beneath a similar or the same mask; the later return of the original Xuemei proves that this episode is a substitution, not evidence that Xuemei and Du Lingfei are one person. The mask is first reported as Xuemei's distinguishing feature when news spreads of her ascent to peak Earthstring Foundation Establishment. It is physically described soon afterward as a blood-colored mask decorated with a plum blossom and paired with her crimson clothing. From then on it hides her face during meetings, travel, cultivation, and conflict, making the flower design a recurring visual identifier. (Chapters 173, 186, 191, and 199–209)

The mask does not prevent observers from reading everything about its wearer. Blood can drip from behind it, and her visible eyes still communicate emotion. During the Blood Master trial, the original Xuemei is wounded in the right hand and has blood caked on her face beneath the mask, evidence that later helps Bai distinguish her from the person who replaces her. (Chapters 191 and 254)

Temporary substitution in the Blood Ancestor

After the transition into the Ancient Blood Path, a figure wearing the plum-blossom mask materializes ahead of Bai. When he immobilizes the figure, the mask falls and reveals Du Lingfei's face. Bai consequently believes for a time that the woman he knows as Xuemei may be Du Lingfei. The corpus does not show when or how the substitution occurred, or whether Du used Xuemei's physical mask, a duplicate, or an appearance produced by another method. It therefore supports temporary presentation beneath the mask, not a transfer of the item's ownership. (Chapters 255–261)

The ambiguity is resolved only in part after the trial. A masked Xuemei reappears, and later addresses Bai as Blood Master. When Bai forcibly pulls off her mask while she is still too injured to resist, he sees a different face from Du Lingfei's. He also recognizes the scar connected to the hand wound suffered by the original Xuemei before the substitution. These details establish that the current wearer is the earlier Xuemei and that Du Lingfei's brief appearance did not merge their identities. (Chapters 300–311)

Forced removal and final condition

The two removals shown in the corpus are not voluntary transfers. The first occurs when Bai's gravitational technique makes the substituted wearer's mask fall; the second occurs when he grabs it from the recovering Xuemei despite her inability to resist. Bai handles the object momentarily to expose the wearer's face, but no passage says that he keeps it. The mask is intact when removed in Chapter 311, and its location after that scene is not separately narrated. (Chapters 257 and 311)

Abilities and properties

• Facial concealment: The mask physically prevents onlookers from seeing its wearer's face under ordinary circumstances. Its plum-blossom design simultaneously makes the wearer recognizable as Xuemei's public persona. (Chapters 173, 186, and 191–209)

• No demonstrated identity transformation: Du Lingfei's face appears beneath the mask during a temporary substitution, but the mask is never shown changing one face into another. The mechanism that places Du in Xuemei's role is left unexplained. (Chapters 255–261 and 300–311)

• Limited physical protection: The mask can remain in place while its wearer is wounded, but blood passes behind or below it and it is easily dislodged or pulled off when the wearer cannot resist. No defensive durability, aura suppression, or cultivation enhancement is established. (Chapters 254, 257, 302, and 311)
