Shangguan Tianyou
Shangguan Tianyou is the leading south-bank Chosen of the Spirit Stream Sect when Bai Xiaochun enters cultivation. Gifted with a Sword Spirit Body and surrounded by rumors of heaven-sent fortune, he builds his identity on being the foremost genius of his generation. Repeated defeats by Bai turn that pride into a long rivalry, although he continues serving the Spirit Stream and River-Defying sects and eventually survives into the Arch-Emperor Dynasty. (Chapters 35, 82–96, 140–183, 314–361, 862–997, and 1218)
Biography
The South Bank's Foremost Chosen
Shangguan Tianyou is first introduced through sect rumor as one of the south bank's three great Chosen. He is said to have found an ancient sword at three, gained a crimson cloudbeast at seven, and obtained a golden shield at thirteen; some disciples even speculate that he is the reincarnation of a mighty sword cultivator. Those claims are hearsay, but his Sword Spirit Body is confirmed when he transforms sword qi into lotuses before reaching Foundation Establishment. (Chapters 35 and 82)
As the Green Crest Peak lord's apprentice, he reaches the eighth level of Qi Condensation and becomes the south bank's strongest entrant in the Chosen battles. His void magic and flying sword initially put him ahead in the qualifying trial, only for Bai to overtake him. Shangguan treats that reversal as an intolerable injury to his pride and resolves to prove himself in direct competition. (Chapters 82–85)
Their match deepens the grievance. Bai tries to concede, but Shangguan continues attacking and insults his family, prompting Bai to fight seriously. Shangguan uses multiple swords, blood-colored sword arts, and a net formed through the Hellfiend Formation, yet Bai defeats him decisively. The loss does not end Shangguan's status as a Chosen; it changes Bai from an irritating peer into the rival against whom he measures his worth. (Chapters 95–96)
Five Tideflows in the Fallen Sword World
In the Fallen Sword World, Shangguan competes for earthstring and heavenstring opportunities with the leading Chosen of all four sects. He loosens a mysterious seal within himself to unleash a murderous sword attack, accepting a severe cost that leaves his body withered. He later externalizes his qi, blood, soul, and cultivation as a vast heavenly sword while joining other Chosen against Bai. Neither measure overcomes Bai's growing power. (Chapters 140–165)
Shangguan completes Earthstring Foundation Establishment with five Tideflows. That is a major advancement, but witnessing Bai reach the peak of Earthstring and then Heaven-Dao Foundation Establishment makes the result feel like another defeat. Back in the sect, Bai's experimental Human Controlling Grand Magic shreds Shangguan's elder robe in public, adding humiliation to their cultivation rivalry. (Chapters 161–165, 173, and 182–183)
A Rival Within the River-Defying Sect
Shangguan remains with the Spirit Stream Division through its alliance and expansion into the River-Defying Sect. He operates an incarnation of the sect's battle formation and sends out webs of sword qi during war. When Bai's Heaven-Dao Gold Core and institutional status place him even farther ahead, Shangguan bows when required but privately remains bitter and defiant. (Chapters 314, 331, and 338)
By the time Bai is selected for a dangerous arcane-pocket-realm expedition, Shangguan is near madness over the widening gap between them. He calls Bai unworthy and swears to crush him, while the other Chosen turn the same spectacle into motivation for secluded cultivation. The corpus does not show Shangguan fulfilling that vow or clearly narrate his next realm. (Chapters 358–361)
War and a Quieter Life
Shangguan nevertheless serves the River-Defying Sect in its later wars. During the siege by the three Middle Reaches sects, one of the Spirit Stream Division's spell-formation giants bears his likeness and fights at the front. He later appears among the River-Defying disciples in the final Heavenspan war when Bai calls them out of the conflict. These scenes establish continued loyalty to the sect even though they do not isolate his personal actions or cultivation level. (Chapters 862 and 997)
The destruction of the Heavenspan Realm does not receive a separate scene from Shangguan's perspective. His latest recorded appearance is in Arch-Emperor City, where Bai sees that the once-spectacular Chosen has become quiet and reserved. He still carries the impression of an unsheathed sword, but sits alone drinking and muttering about Zhou Xinqi. The corpus confirms his survival but does not explain the intervening journey, the reason for this change, or his final cultivation. (Chapter 1218)
Appearance and personality
Shangguan Tianyou is exceptionally handsome, with black hair and an aura repeatedly compared to an unsheathed sword. At his grand entrance to the south-bank competition, he stands on an ancient green flying sword amid golden light and projected green lotuses. His appearance and controlled courtesy win admiration from fellow disciples, especially before rivalry strips away his composure. (Chapters 82 and 361)
Pride is his defining trait. Shangguan expects extraordinary talent and good fortune to place him above his peers, so Bai's victories provoke envy, denial, and increasingly personal resentment. He can be relentless and cruel in competition, including continuing an attack after Bai offers to concede. Yet he is not shown betraying his sect; he continues to fight in its formations and survives with its people. His quiet later demeanor marks a change, but the corpus does not state whether it comes from maturity, loss, exhaustion, or feelings connected to Zhou Xinqi. (Chapters 83–96, 161–183, 314–361, 862, and 1218)
Abilities and cultivation
Sword Spirit Body and sword qi
The Sword Spirit Body is a confirmed innate constitution that gives Shangguan unusual affinity with sword cultivation. Before Foundation Establishment he can turn sword qi into lotus projections, ride an ancient flying sword at high speed, and divide his offense among multiple blades. His presence resembles a drawn sword even in later life, suggesting the constitution remains central to his cultivation, though no later evolution of it is named. (Chapters 35, 82–96, 361, and 1218)
Void magic and sword formations
Shangguan is adept in void magic, which contributes to his speed during the south-bank trial. In combat he creates blood-colored sword strands, a surrounding sword net, and a Hellfiend Formation. During the River-Defying Sect's war he controls a large spell-formation incarnation and produces another sword-qi web. The source demonstrates these effects but does not specify whether the later formation is an individual technique or a collective Spirit Stream array. (Chapters 82–96 and 331)
The loosened seal and Earthstring foundation
Inside the Fallen Sword World, Shangguan releases part of a seal described in connection with reincarnation and gains a devastating sword attack. The act visibly withers him and carries a high cost. The corpus does not confirm the rumor that he is literally a reincarnated almighty, identify who placed the seal, or explain whether the power can be used safely after this event. (Chapters 140–165)
He ultimately establishes an Earthstring foundation with five Tideflows. Bai's nine-Tideflow pressure forces him back, giving a clear comparison between their foundations at that point. Later chapters show him seeking Core Formation and fighting in major wars but never plainly state a completed new realm, so five-Tideflow Earthstring Foundation Establishment is the latest securely detailed cultivation stage rather than necessarily his final power. (Chapters 161–165, 173, 361, 862, and 997)
Power progression
| Stage / Realm / Ability | Chapter(s) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Qi Condensation Sword Spirit Body | 35, 82–96 | His innate constitution supports unusually strong sword qi, lotus projections, rapid sword flight, and multi-blade offense. |
| Costly partial seal release | 140–165 | Opens part of an unexplained reincarnation-linked seal for a devastating sword attack, visibly withering his body; the power is not confirmed safe or permanent. |
| Five-Tideflow Earthstring Foundation | 161–165 | Establishes an Earthstring foundation before Bai's nine-Tideflow pressure forces him back; no later realm is explicitly confirmed. |
Relationships
Bai Xiaochun
Shangguan's relationship with Bai is an unequal rivalry. Bai first regards him warily because of his reputation, then defeats him in the Chosen battles and repeatedly surpasses him in cultivation. Shangguan interprets those advances as theft of a place that should have been his and never defeats Bai in return. Even so, both remain members of the same sect and later answer the River-Defying Sect's calls in war. (Chapters 35, 82–96, 140–183, 314–361, and 997)
Zhou Xinqi
Zhou Xinqi is a fellow south-bank Chosen whose abilities once place her in the same celebrated group as Shangguan. She watches his early entrance gravely, while much later he is seen alone muttering about her. The corpus does not state that they became partners, explain what he says, or clarify whether his feelings are romantic, regretful, or competitive. Their relationship should therefore be understood as a long association with unresolved implications rather than a confirmed romance. (Chapters 35, 82, and 1218)
Green Crest Peak Lord
The unnamed Green Crest Peak lord is Shangguan's master and one of the leaders who recruited and meticulously trained the south bank's new generation of Chosen. His approval helps establish Shangguan's early standing, but the corpus gives little detail about their personal bond after the south-bank competitions. (Chapter 82)
