Bai Lin — A Will Eternal

Bai Lin is the general of the Skin Flayers, a severe but adaptable Great Wall commander who recognizes the military value of Bai Xiaochun's unorthodox medicine and turns a forced conscription into durable personal loyalty. (Chapters 466–478, 504–507, 563, and 883)

Biography

Conscription and the Exploding Furnaces

Bai Lin is introduced by reputation as the highest-ranked of the five Great Wall generals and one of the strongest people below the devas. Strict, temperamental, and accustomed to unquestioned authority, he conscripts Bai Xiaochun into ten years of Skin Flayer service after the younger cultivator reaches Great Wall City. Yet his first judgment is not purely punitive: when he interprets Bai Xiaochun's request for his companions as loyalty under pressure, his manner softens, and he promises that sufficient battle credit can bring them into the army. He then places Bai Xiaochun in the Armory, offers enormous resources in return for Soul Convergence Pills, and accepts responsibility for the apothecary disasters he has been warned may follow. The first furnace explosion tests Bai Lin's command instincts. Finding three furnaces about to detonate amid a crisis, he teleports them over the Great Wall and discovers that both their blast and medicinal effect devastate enemy souls. His anger immediately gives way to analysis: he asks Bai Xiaochun to increase production, supplies rare materials and furnaces, and repeatedly deploys the resulting weapons. When enemies develop countermeasures, Bai Lin supports further experimentation rather than discarding the apothecary, eventually providing one thousand furnaces and Nascent Soul cultivators to seal and heat the largest batches. That willingness to convert an accident into doctrine helps the five legions regain initiative against massed souls. (Chapters 477–490)

Promotion, Protection, and Field Command

Bai Lin rewards results within military rules. He promotes Bai Xiaochun through lieutenant, captain, colonel, and eventually major general as the younger man's pills, battlefield rescues, and battle credit justify each step. He also protects the asset he is cultivating: he assigns rescued soldiers to Bai Xiaochun, asks Major General Zhou Xingjun to watch over him, resists attempts by the other generals to poach him, and spends rare Nascent Soul Pills to retain his service. Their exchanges mix genuine trust with mutual performance—Bai Lin enjoys praise of his powerful grandfather, while Bai Xiaochun understands how to present loyalty—but the material support and increasing responsibility on both sides make the bond substantive. As a commander, Bai Lin remains directly exposed to the war. He oversees operations from the wall, fights the souls of Wildlands necromancers, waits behind the defensive shield until the enemy commits, and then personally leads the Skin Flayers' countercharge. He gathers intelligence on the black pillar and helps organize the force around the resulting labyrinth, but Chen Hetian overrules his attempt to spare Bai Xiaochun from the mission. When the labyrinth collapses and Bai Xiaochun disappears, Bai Lin drinks alone and admits that he failed his subordinate; his relief that Bai might still live outweighs the lost opportunity inside. The River-Defying Sect Crisis

After Bai Xiaochun returns from the Wildlands, Bai Lin's allegiance is tested against his own family. His grandfather, Bai Zhentian, supports the Polarity River Court's attack on the River-Defying Sect and later joins the killing mission. Bai Lin first argues bitterly with him and, once Bai Xiaochun is known to be alive, invokes Bai's status as a Skin Flayer major general and Hall of Steel Veins member. He reports to the Hall, mobilizes with its patriarch, the other generals, and Zhao Tianjiao, and arrives prepared to oppose the devas threatening Bai's home. (Chapters 876 and 882–883)

Bai Xiaochun has already defeated the attacking devas when the reinforcements arrive. The scale of that victory shocks Bai Lin and makes him reassess his own progress; after thanking and reminiscing with Bai, he returns to secluded cultivation. Their old familiarity remains intact—Bai Lin later heads off Bai Xiaochun's approach to Bai Zhentian by visiting him first—but the former subordinate has now advanced beyond the general who recruited him. Heavenspan Island and the Deadmire

Bai Lin later appears among the eastern Nascent Soul cultivators sailing to Heavenspan Island for the Celestial's trial. Bai Xiaochun gives him and Zhao Tianjiao favored accommodations, evidence that their friendship has survived the change in status. Once the trial opens, its entrants separate into individually dangerous environments, and Bai Xiaochun can only infer that Bai Lin and his other friends face mortal peril. (Chapters 915–927)

Bai Lin survives but reaches the reported exit badly injured, supported by Big Fatty Zhang beside Zhao Tianjiao. The exit deposits them at the Deadmire's bone galleon rather than ordinary safety, forcing them to endure its departure and return. He is last seen alive among the eastern cultivators, nervously watching Bai Xiaochun confront the northern powers after the voyage. (Chapters 943–955)

Appearance and personality

Bai Lin is most often seen in a black suit of armor with an expressionless face. When angered, his hair flies in the force of his aura, the surroundings grow cold, and he is compared to a god of death. His later appearances continue to emphasize armor, sharp eyes, and the oppressive presence of a veteran commander rather than detailed facial features. (Chapters 472–473 and 883)

He is direct, moody, proud of his deva grandfather, and capable of bloodshed without hesitation. His severity coexists with practical generosity: Bai Lin respects demonstrated skill, provides what a valued subordinate needs, and revises his judgment quickly when new evidence appears. He is excitable about effective weapons, comfortable leading from the front, and loyal enough to quarrel with his family and mobilize his institution for Bai Xiaochun. His regret after the labyrinth shows that he also accepts personal responsibility when command decisions fail someone under his protection. (Chapters 472–478, 483–504, 532, 563, and 883)

Abilities and cultivation

Bai Lin is a half-step Deva Realm military cultivator whose demonstrated strengths lie in speed, battlefield force, command, and tactical adaptation. The corpus does not name his cultivation method or provide a signature individual attack.

Half-step Deva cultivation

Bai Lin's cultivation is far above Bai Xiaochun's when they meet and is explicitly described as half a step into the Deva Realm. He can teleport between the Armory and Great Wall in a crisis, seize and hurl multiple unstable furnaces, suppress batches with cultivation pressure, and confront necromancer souls alongside the other highest army officers. Late Nascent Soul necromancers equipped with powerful spirit-enhanced items can challenge quasi-devas such as Bai Lin, establishing that his level is formidable but not equivalent to a true deva. No later scene confirms that he completes the breakthrough. (Chapters 472, 477–479, 483, 490–502, and 594)

Battlefield command

The Skin Flayers operate under strict rules and a hierarchy of ten major generals, each with subordinate corps. Bai Lin controls this structure through direct orders, identity-medallion communications, and personal leadership. He times counterattacks, coordinates Soul Convergence Pill deployment, oversees retreats, and charges with the legion once an enemy formation is exposed. His authority extends into personnel and logistics: he reallocates thousands of soldiers, commissions special production, and moves resources quickly enough to supply rare materials within days. (Chapters 472–476, 480, 487–493, 507, 520, and 532–535)

Tactical adaptation

Bai Lin's most distinctive competency is recognizing military uses that others miss. He identifies the amplified medicinal effect of exploding furnaces, treats them as expendable battlefield weapons, observes enemy countermeasures, and finances successive refinements. He also understands that the enemy's attacks are designed to draw Chen Hetian out of Great Wall City and therefore refuses a reckless personal response. These are strategic judgments rather than a supernatural art, and their effectiveness depends on Bai Xiaochun's medicine, the legions' logistics, and the Great Wall's defenses. Relationships

Bai Xiaochun: Bai Lin conscripts him as an apothecary, recognizes his innovations, promotes and protects him, and eventually regards him as more than a subordinate. Bai Xiaochun's disappearance leaves Bai Lin guilt-stricken, while his return prompts Bai Lin to oppose his own grandfather and mobilize the Hall of Steel Veins.
Bai Zhentian: Bai Lin's deva grandfather and a source of unabashed family pride. Their loyalty divides over the River-Defying Sect: Bai Lin argues with him and invokes institutional force when Bai Zhentian moves against Bai Xiaochun.
Zhao Tianjiao: A fellow veteran and ally in defending Bai Xiaochun. They mobilize for the River-Defying Sect, enter secluded cultivation after witnessing Bai's power, and later survive the Heavenspan Island trial and Deadmire together.
Zhao Long: One of the Skin Flayer soldiers through whom Bai Lin supplies and supervises Bai Xiaochun. Zhao Long becomes part of the command network supporting the apothecary's experiments and missions.
Chen Hetian: The deva commanding the Great Wall. Bai Lin follows his strategic authority but cannot overturn his decision to send Bai Xiaochun into the labyrinth, a failure that later weighs heavily on him.
