Jo Yeon

Jo Yeon is the puppet artisan who becomes the Mad Lord after the murder of his wife Wol Ha-eun. His Wonderfully Mysterious Fortress, living puppets, and consciousness methods make him a calamity, but their emotional center is an attempt to replace a lost person with an obedient performance. Kim Yeon is Jo Yeon's distinct captive disciple and rival; she is never the Mad Lord, an alternate Jo Yeon, or a continuation of his personality.

A later blind woman also named Jo Yeon identifies herself as the Mad Lord's reincarnation through causality and intermittent dream-memory. She explicitly denies continuity of personality, complete memory, ability, and intelligence. This article follows the causal legacy across both lives without presenting them as one uninterrupted consciousness.

Biography

Ascension Path and a dangerous teacher

Jo first appears as the feared Mad Lord descending from a puppet on Ascension Path. A hunchbacked old man with glittering eyes and abrupt laughter, he intimidates several Heavenly Being cultivators with the box containing [Her]. His attention falls on Kim Yeon's immense consciousness and Seo Eun-hyun's unusual insight. Exceptional people are potential disciples, materials, and performers in the perfect puppet play he wants to build. (Chapters 76–77, 93)

Madness does not erase his intelligence. Jo explains fate to Seo Eun-hyun, invades consciousness, traces curses, and reads the structures through which events repeat. Seo fears being converted into a living puppet, yet concepts learned from Jo influence his later understanding of attraction and causality. Their relationship is therefore never simple mentorship: useful knowledge is delivered by a captor whose curiosity can turn the learner into the next component of an experiment. Jo later accompanies Seo against Yuan Li and pursues him with an enormous puppet force. Selective cooperation makes him more dangerous rather than more trustworthy, because he can recognize a shared objective without abandoning possession as his final answer. Seo studies the circuits and weaknesses of the puppets while trying to survive the attention. By the time they ascend, Jo is already both an occasional rescuer and a persistent threat whose bargains are organized around his own aesthetic obsession. (Chapters 130–140)

Captivity in the Wonderfully Mysterious Fortress

After ascending, Jo captures Seo and Kim Yeon inside the Wonderfully Mysterious Fortress. He is initially Grand Perfection Heavenly Being and completes Four-Axis while holding them, but the fortress and puppet legion multiply his practical power beyond personal realm. He modifies bodies, forces Kim to learn the Wonderfully Mysterious Innate Heart Canon, and turns Seo into a living puppet while treating their resistance as material for a better performance. (Chapters 140–145)

His objective is to reproduce the happiest festival he shared with Wol Ha-eun. The puppet [Her] is designed as a substitute, while Kim's consciousness seems capable of animating the alternate spacetime strongly enough to make the scene feel real. The performance drains consciousness and life force from participants. Jo's craft can reproduce setting, motion, and an apparently responsive partner, but it cannot establish that [Her] is Wol Ha-eun or grant consent retroactively to the people sustaining the reenactment. (Chapters 145–148)

Kim seizes control threads while Seo cuts circuits and spacetime, exposing the fortress's technical and emotional vulnerabilities. Jo lets them leave under Seo's promise to return as a worthy puppet, revealing flashes of reason within obsession without renouncing the obsession itself. The escape advances Kim's consciousness art and gives Seo practical knowledge of the system, but the fortress survives as an unresolved threat because its creator still believes a perfected imitation can defeat grief. The artisan, Wol Ha-eun, and the heart restored

Jo's recovered memories show a different beginning. He is a disregarded Jo Clan artisan whose warmth, teasing pride, and craft attract Wol Ha-eun. She becomes martial teacher, creative partner, and wife; their paired spears materialize a relationship in which his making and her fighting strengthen one another. Pressure from the clan raises his cultivation and status, but usefulness does not give him safety from the hierarchy that once dismissed him. (Chapters 448–452)

The Jo Clan murders Wol Ha-eun, and Jo answers by destroying the clan and devoting centuries to a controllable replacement. His consciousness patterns merge through threads as grief becomes the Mad Lord's system. The Wonderfully Mysterious Fortress and [Her] are therefore technical triumphs built on a refusal: he cannot accept that love may remain meaningful after the beloved has died, so every improvement tries to convert memory into permanent possession. (Chapters 451–453)

Much later, Seo and Kim enter Jo's memories and help return the Heart of Love. They recognize that his bond with Wol Ha-eun was real while refusing the claim that the puppet is the same person. Jo regains lucidity, apologizes for the harm caused by madness, and performs one final dance before dying peacefully. His last development is not a stronger construct, but acceptance that connection survives loss without requiring an imitation to replace the dead. (Chapters 423–455)

A reincarnation chooses atonement

Long after the original Jo dies, billions of self-repairing and self-evolving puppets descended from his system devastate the Vast Cold Realm. A blind woman named Jo Yeon receives intermittent dreams connected to the Mad Lord, while a later Ha-eun carries the corresponding causal bond. This Jo does not claim the original man's personality or complete memory. She accepts responsibility because the inherited catastrophe reaches her through causality, not because punishment has proven them psychologically identical. (Chapters 837–843)

The reincarnated Jo becomes chief strategist of the puppet suppression force. She studies factory batches, matches combat methods to structural weaknesses, mediates disputes, and designs a device able to stop the autonomous network from harming living beings. Her body lacks the Mad Lord's power, so the plan depends on Makli Hyun-ah's command, Ahn Geum's passage, Ha-eun's abilities, and other fighters carrying her to the Overseer Factory's control center. (Chapters 838–844)

Jo connects the device and permanently removes the system's autonomous mandate to slaughter, though a later external controller could still misuse it. When the destroyed calculation device triggers self-destruction, she and Ha-eun refuse evacuation and remain together at the center. Their deaths produce a fused Taiji associated with the victims regaining human bodies, and memorial statues preserve their names. The story does not explicitly confirm that either individual revives after the explosion. (Chapters 843–845, 847)

Appearance and personality

The original Jo appears as a hunchbacked, bearded old man whose glittering eyes, finger-chewing, drooling, laughter, and sudden mood changes externalize the Mad Lord's instability. His recovered youth is warmer: a teasing and proud craftsman capable of loyalty and tenderness. As his consciousness art advances, seven facial patterns merge and connect with threads into a beautiful but grotesque flame-like configuration, making inner fragmentation visible on the body. (Chapters 76–77, 93, 140–142, 448–453)

The reincarnated Jo is a blind woman who normally keeps her eyes closed and navigates through hearing. She seems powerless beside the cultivators executing her plans, yet she is observant, technically incisive, gentle with Badger, restrained around Ha-eun, and immovable once atonement becomes possible. Her quieter personality is evidence against treating reincarnation as restored continuity: similar architectural insight and causal duty do not recreate the original Mad Lord's emotions or behavior. Abilities and cultivation

Jo's capability divides between personal cultivation, constructed power, consciousness methods, and the later reincarnation's strategic knowledge. His fortress reaches Integration and quasi-Star-Shattering combat scales without those descriptions cleanly becoming personal formal realms. The blind reincarnation likewise understands enough to sabotage the system but does not regain the original man's cultivation, full memories, or crafting ability. (Chapters 142–217, 419, 837–845)

Puppet and artifact craftsmanship

Jo begins as an artisan constructing spiritual-energy circuits and paired weapons, then expands the craft into living puppets, modification factories, weapons, and the Wonderfully Mysterious Fortress. Puppet armies overwhelm same-realm opponents through number, specialization, and coordination. Later descendants inherit self-repair, mass production, technological evolution, and imitation of human behavior, letting the system persist for mythic periods after its creator's death. Circuits can be severed, disrupted, or seized by a compatible consciousness. Seo's Formless Sword cuts control and spacetime links, Kim Yeon's threads contest the network, and favorable Hundred Schools methods defeat particular constructs more efficiently than raw force. The greatest limitation is conceptual: after Jo dies, inherited objectives decay into empty imitation and mass slaughter. The original craft's latest condition is an autonomous legacy shut down at the Overseer Factory, not a living master still improving it. (Chapters 140–149, 216–221, 837–844)

Wonderfully Mysterious Innate Heart Canon and Yeon's Play

The Canon connects facial patterns, puppets, fortress systems, and participants through threads of consciousness. At full activation, Yeon's Play uses performance and supplied consciousness or life force to pull an alternate spacetime modeled on Jo and Wol Ha-eun's remembered festival into the present. It can invade minds, bind puppets, resonate with compatible practitioners, and coordinate a fortress-wide population as one staged world. (Chapters 141–149, 219–221, 423–455)

The performance consumes its sustaining lives, Kim can seize control through superior compatible consciousness, and Seo can cut its spatial or causal flow. No technical refinement makes [Her] identical to Wol Ha-eun. Jo's final development is therefore psychological: accepting the Heart of Love ends the need to enforce false equivalence between memory, puppet, and person. Derivative architecture persists afterward, but the original method's living center ends with his lucid death. (Chapters 145–149, 423–455)

Reincarnated strategy and disruption device

Past-life dreams and present study give the reincarnated Jo enough knowledge to classify factory batches, identify structural vulnerabilities, choose compatible combat methods, and build a disruption device. Once connected to the Overseer Factory's control tower, it removes the autonomous network's ability to harm living beings. This is precise systems sabotage rather than recovery of the Mad Lord's personal authority. (Chapters 838, 840, 843–844)

She depends on stronger allies to reach the tower, never recovers every missing memory, and cannot stop the damaged calculation device from destroying the factory. The device also cannot prevent a future outside controller from deliberately misusing puppets. Its latest state is successful deployment followed by destruction or loss in the explosion; Jo herself dies after choosing to remain with Ha-eun. (Chapters 843–845)
