Robber
Robber is a goblin sapper whose irreverence masks practical loyalty to his soldiers and a lasting commitment to Catherine Foundling’s campaigns. His work as a scout, demolitions specialist, and raider repeatedly gives Catherine options that larger formations cannot provide.
Biography
Rat Company and the Fifteenth Legion
Robber first meets Catherine as a sergeant in the Fourth line of Rat Company, where his blunt humor and relaxed manner contrast with the dangerous work of the goblin sappers. When the war game collapses and his line is nearly wiped out, he returns with a few surviving sappers and asks Catherine to take them into her retreating force. She accepts, and the survivors become part of the company that will grow around her. Robber’s survival is therefore also the start of a working relationship: Catherine gives him room to use his judgement, while he contributes the reconnaissance and explosives that let her smaller force strike above its weight. (Chapters 15–18)
As Catherine’s command expands, Robber’s responsibilities do too. He leads patrols, uses tunnels and sappers’ tools to shape the ground, and later operates with detached goblin forces where their stealth and mobility are more valuable than a conventional battle line. His promotion to Special Tribune formalizes an independence Catherine already relies on; Juniper’s insistence on the title reflects that his unconventional methods have become an established part of the army’s command structure. Robber remains willing to take personal risks, but his reaction to the losses among his people shows that the bravado does not make those deaths easy for him. (Chapters 25–27, 96, 145, 249, 381, and 387)
The War for Keter
In the campaign against the Dead King, Robber commands a cohort of goblin raiders and continues volunteering for dangerous work. Catherine trusts him with scouting routes and testing enemy positions, while his reports help her distinguish usable paths from traps and blocked approaches. His long experience makes him effective, but his increasing appetite for risk also reflects his own idea of a soldier’s end: he had been seeking a worthy death for years and would have hated the peace that followed the war. (Chapters 381 and 387)
Robber dies in the fighting around Keter when the Crab is destroyed. Catherine grieves that she will no longer hear his jokes, while Pickler admits she had come to believe his boasts of invincibility and regrets leaving things unsaid. The loss is personal for Catherine and for the remnants of Rat Company, but it also remains tied to Robber’s political commitment: after his death, Pickler argues that the goblins who followed Catherine did so against the Matrons’ rule because Robber had been right about the cost of their subordination. (Chapters 407, 425, 433, and 455)
Appearance and personality
Robber is a small goblin with yellow eyes. Catherine estimates that he is around sixteen during one campaign and later notes that goblins age quickly by human standards. His irreverence, sharp humour, and taste for audacious schemes are recurring traits, but he is not indifferent to casualties: after losing goblin soldiers, Catherine observes that the losses have visibly hurt him despite his usual posturing. (Chapters 25, 268, and 249)
Military skills
Robber serves as a goblin sapper, using demolition charges, traps, tunnels, and stealth to weaken positions or create openings for Catherine’s forces. He is also trusted with scouting, infiltration, and detached raids. These skills depend on preparation and judgement rather than a recorded Name or formal supernatural ability; the story emphasizes his knowledge of sapper work and his willingness to act inside enemy territory. (Chapters 18, 25–27, 70, and 381–387)
