Pickler

Pickler is the Fifteenth Legion’s senior goblin engineer, whose traps, siege engines, and fortifications repeatedly turn Catherine’s plans into workable defenses and assaults. Her devotion to her craft gives her a distinctive place in the army, while her ties to Robber and to the High Ridge Matron complicate her loyalties in ways that go beyond military service.

Biography

Rat Company and the Fifteenth

Pickler begins as the sapper lieutenant of Rat Company, already known for her talent in engineering and for keeping her soldiers alive through careful preparation. After Catherine takes command of the scattered survivors, Pickler adapts their skills to the new company’s needs: her demolition charges, plans, and knowledge of Legion-standard camps give Catherine options against opponents with larger forces. She is willing to explain the limits of a plan as clearly as its advantages, and Catherine increasingly turns to her before committing troops to a costly assault. (Chapters 19, 22–27, and 37)

As the Fifteenth grows, Pickler becomes its Senior Sapper and then Sapper-General. Her work expands from traps and demolitions to field artillery, repeating scorpions, ballistas, and fortifications. She treats engineering as both a profession and a personal calling: when allowed to build, she is eager to test designs she has developed since childhood, and she is often most animated when a machine performs as intended. The Legion’s campaigns give her the resources to take on larger projects, while her own experience keeps those projects tied to the soldiers who must use them. (Chapters 43, 49–52, 59, 68–71, and 83–87)

The High Ridge and the Army of Callow

Pickler’s position as a goblin from the High Ridge Matron’s line gives her knowledge of goblin politics that few of Catherine’s other officers can offer. She and her mother are estranged, and Pickler does not simply accept the Matrons’ authority as the natural voice of her people. She contributes practical knowledge about goblin traditions and the tribes’ interests, even when she would rather be working than speaking for them. Catherine learns to rely on that perspective while recognizing that Pickler’s priorities and her own are not always identical. (Chapters 45, 67, 82–84, and 102–03)

Her relationship with Robber develops alongside their long service in Rat Company and the Fifteenth. The two share a history of bickering, competition, and affection that neither turns into an uncomplicated courtship. After his death, Pickler admits that she loved him more than she had understood while he was alive, and regrets the conversations and work she assumed they would have time to finish. Her grief makes clear that her bluntness and reserve never meant indifference to the people closest to her. (Chapters 19, 136, 250–51, and 425)

Siege Work and Keter

Pickler’s engineering becomes increasingly important as the war moves from campaign maneuver to the defense and assault of fortified cities. She designs devices that protect the army’s flanks, breach walls, and allow troops to hold difficult ground. At Keter she helps shape the approach to the city and the defenses around the Grand Alliance’s camps, continuing to treat the practical details of a siege as a matter of life and death for the soldiers under her command. (Chapters 167–70, 302–04, 381, 394, and 424–30)

The return of Matron Wither as a political power forces Pickler to confront the consequences of her family’s place among the Clans. Her mother’s alliance with Malicia and seizure of Foramen leave the goblins divided, and Pickler speaks to Catherine about the long cost of serving the Tower and the many goblins whose lives were spent to maintain that order. She remains with Catherine’s army, but does not let loyalty erase her concern for goblins beyond it. The loss of Robber and the pressure of the Keter campaign only sharpen the personal cost of that choice. (Chapters 380, 403, 406, 420, and 433–44)

Appearance and personality

Pickler is a small female goblin with pale yellow eyes. She is shorter than many goblins around her, and her appearance changes less with age than that of ordinary goblins because she comes from a Matron line. She is usually associated with the practical gear of a sapper and the engines she designs. (Chapters 25, 302, and 472)

She is reserved, even-tempered, and often more comfortable discussing a mechanism than social matters. Her quiet manner does not make her passive: she can be sharply direct when a plan is unsound or when a political decision threatens her people. Her enthusiasm for engineering is one of her most visible traits, especially when she can put one of her designs to use. (Chapters 43, 68–69, 84, and 142)

Skills and abilities

Her expertise rests on sapper training, technical ingenuity, and the authority of a senior Legion engineer; her story presents no separate supernatural discipline.

  • Demolitions and traps: She places charges, prepares traps, and designs kill zones that let smaller forces resist stronger ones. (Chapters 24, 26–27, 57–59)
  • Siege engineering: She designs and directs the use of artillery, repeating scorpions, ballistas, trebuchets, and other engines, adapting their placement and timing to the battlefield. (Chapters 49–52, 68–71, and 167–70)
  • Fortification: She plans walls, trenches, firing platforms, and defensive camps, using local materials and terrain to make positions harder to breach. (Chapters 83, 381, and 424–30)
  • Goblin knowledge: Her upbringing among the High Ridge gives her insight into Matron politics, goblin custom, and the interests that divide the Clans. (Chapters 67, 82–84, and 433)

Relationships

  • Catherine Foundling: Pickler serves Catherine from the early campaigns onward, providing practical engineering advice and increasingly large-scale defenses. She remains loyal while insisting that Catherine understand what the Clans and their soldiers have sacrificed. (Chapters 19–27, 51–52, 83–84, and 433)

  • Robber: Robber is a longtime companion, rival, and friend. Pickler’s later grief reveals the depth of an affection that their familiar bickering had left unresolved. (Chapters 19, 136, 250–51, and 425)

  • Hakram Deadhand: As senior officers in Rat Company and the Fifteenth, Pickler and Hakram work together across years of campaigning. Their shared knowledge helps Catherine navigate both military and goblin matters. (Chapters 19, 25, 67, and 433)

  • Matron Wither: Pickler’s mother and the High Ridge Matron is estranged from her. Wither’s alliance with Malicia and seizure of Foramen make that family divide part of the wider struggle for goblin independence. (Chapters 82–84 and 380, 433)

  • The goblin sappers: Pickler leads and protects the engineers under her command, treating their expertise as essential to the Legion’s survival rather than expendable support. (Chapters 24–28, 57–59, and 167–70)

Items

Her signature work is siege engines, fortifications, and sapper equipment rather than a distinct recurring personal artifact. (Chapters 49–52, 68–71, and 167–70)
