Nilin
Nilin is a Soninke officer whose practical judgment and steady manner make him one of Nauk’s most trusted subordinates. He helps hold the Fifteenth together through its early campaigns, rises from sergeant to tribune, and becomes a friend to Catherine Foundling as well as to Nauk. His death at Three Hills is followed by the revelation that he had been placed in the Legions by Callowan nobles and had betrayed the Fifteenth, leaving Catherine to reconcile her grief with the knowledge that their trust had been compromised.
Biography
Nauk’s steady second
Nilin first appears supporting Nauk after the orc is injured in battle. He remains calm under pressure, takes up responsibility when Nauk cannot, and argues against exhausting soldiers who have already marched and fought. Catherine notices his practical judgment as he works through the early games and campaigns of the Fifteenth, and Nauk relies on him to handle the organization and supply work that he dislikes. (Chapters 16–19, 24, and 27)
As the Fifteenth gains experience, Nilin advances to tribune and becomes one of the officers Catherine trusts personally. He escorts her, rides with her and Nauk, and joins their informal gatherings, where his dry humor makes him part of the group rather than merely a useful staff officer. His friendship with Nauk is especially close; after Nilin’s death, Nauk’s grief is visible even by the standards of the orcs, who usually treat public mourning as dishonoring the dead. (Chapters 26–27, 34, and 43–44)
Death and betrayal
Nilin is killed during the fighting at Three Hills. Catherine orders that his body be recovered and placed on the funeral pyre with the Exiled Prince and Page, honoring the officer and friend she knew. Later, when she finds his blackened bones on the battlefield, the discovery renews her sense of responsibility for the people lost under her command. (Chapters 50–51 and 56)
The story later reveals that Nilin had been placed in the War College by Callowan nobles and had acted as a traitor within the Fifteenth. Catherine had regarded him as a friend, so the revelation makes his loss harder to understand rather than canceling their earlier bond. The precise terms of his betrayal and the full extent of what he did are not established in the chapters. (Chapters 53, 57, 68, and 76)
Appearance and personality
Nilin is a dark-skinned Soninke man, first described as a quiet young officer with a wry sense of humor. He is steady, observant, and practical, willing to challenge an order when he thinks it will needlessly exhaust his soldiers. (Chapters 16–17, 19, and 44)
Skills and role
Nilin is an experienced Legion officer with particular skill in organization and logistics. He can assume responsibility for Nauk’s duties and manage the practical demands of the command, though no supernatural ability, Named role, or formal power progression is established. (Chapters 24, 27, 34, and 67)
