Nauk

Biography

Rat Company and the Fifteenth

Nauk enters Catherine Foundling’s life as a large, sharp-tongued orc lieutenant in Rat Company. His first scenes establish a blunt soldier who meets Catherine’s defiance with humor and accepts her as a fellow officer once she proves herself. He fights beside her during the War College melee, helps plan the strike on Fox Company’s officers, and offers the kind of direct battlefield advice she needs while still learning command. Their arguments are frank, but Nauk’s loyalty becomes a steady part of her early circle. (Chapters 15, 17–19, 22–26, 28)

As Catherine rises, Nauk becomes a commander of the Fifteenth’s heavies and later its legate. His value is practical: he is aggressive enough to lead a breach, commands the trust of both orc and human soldiers, and does not flinch when casualties mount. He repeatedly works alongside Catherine in councils and campaigns, from the advance on Marchford to the war against Summer. His rough humor and affection for his comrades also show a sentimental side, especially in his grief for Talbot and his courtship of Pickler. (Chapters 31, 44, 50–52, 54, 57, 66, 82–83, 99, 107, 121, 123–124)

Wounds, command, and death

At the Battle of Marchford, Summer fire leaves Nauk gravely wounded and physically changed. Catherine refuses to abandon him; later she visits his tent and watches him struggle to survive. Malicia offers to heal him as part of a political bargain, but Catherine rejects the offer rather than surrender her ambitions or make Nauk’s recovery a price paid to the Empress. The episode underscores how his companionship has become personal to her, beyond his military usefulness. (Chapters 124, 127, 130, 136)

Nauk eventually returns to command and is promoted to general in the Army of Callow. The later campaign shows the cost of his changed condition and the brutal role he has taken on. He dies at Sarcella, killed by the warpriests of the Dominion; Catherine orders a Legion funeral and remembers him as one of the first people who treated her as a soldier worth fighting beside. His loss remains part of the grief shared by Catherine, Hakram, and Pickler. (Chapters 170, 251–253, 260, 289, 299, 391, 425)

Appearance and personality

Nauk is a broad, physically imposing orc whose size and blunt manner are repeatedly contrasted with the more measured Juniper and Hakram. His speech is direct, often irreverent, and quick to turn toward action. He is stubborn, aggressive, and well liked by the soldiers under him; the narrative also associates him with songs, poetry, and earnest courtship. Summer’s fire later scars and disfigures him. (Chapters 17, 31, 44, 121, 170, 289, 299)

  • Hakram Deadhand: Fellow officer and friend; Hakram shares memories of Nauk’s humor and mourns him as a close companion. (Chapters 289, 299)

  • Pickler: Nauk courts the goblin sapper. Their connection is described through his earnest romantic advice and later recollections of the relationship. (Chapters 77, 406, 425)
