John Farrier

Biography

The Gallowborne’s captain

John Farrier first introduces himself to Catherine Foundling as a lieutenant of the Gallowborne, her personal guard. He is a Callowan soldier, wary of his new commander but willing to speak plainly. As the Gallowborne’s remaining senior officer, he brings the company under Catherine’s command during the fighting around Marchford. When she later needs someone to lead the guard, she appoints him captain, despite knowing he is no enthusiastic supporter of the Empire. Farrier’s caution about anti-Praesi feeling among Callowan soldiers helps Catherine understand the divided loyalties inside her own legion. (Chapters 58–59, 64)

Farrier becomes a reliable presence at Catherine’s side. He provides practical advice, keeps the Gallowborne in formation against devils, and obeys her orders even when they put him at a distance from the Named fighting. His soldiers’ banner carries the motto “best of the worst,” a wry expression of the guard’s reputation. The company expands under his leadership, and Farrier is promoted to tribune. His protective instincts sometimes put him at odds with Catherine: he questions her decision to enter danger without reinforcements and protests when his injured guard is left behind. (Chapters 69–73, 77–81, 99, 104–105)

The final campaign

Farrier continues serving as Catherine’s standard-bearer and guard during the Arcadian campaign. He carries her banner, hands her a shield before battle, and rejoins her after the fighting. During the Battle of Dormer, Summer’s green fire kills him; Catherine recognizes his half-bare skull among the dead and recalls how long they had fought and laughed together. His death is among the losses she remembers years later as the cost of trying to reshape Callow. (Chapters 120–124, 126, 368, 432)

Appearance and personality

Farrier is a dark-haired, blue-eyed Callowan, not much taller than Catherine. He is a disciplined guard officer who speaks directly and thinks first about protecting his commander and soldiers. His concern for Catherine is personal as well as professional, though he understands the limits of his role when she faces an enemy beyond a mortal soldier’s reach. (Chapters 58, 69–72, 104)

Relationships

  • Catherine Foundling: His commander and the person he is sworn to protect. Farrier’s loyalty is expressed through candid advice, close attendance, and the Gallowborne’s service as her personal guard. (Chapters 59, 69, 99, 104, 120–121)

  • Nauk: A fellow Fifteenth Legion commander. Farrier serves alongside Nauk’s forces in the campaign and is found at the legate’s side after battle. (Chapters 123)
