Hune Egelsdottir

Biography

Tiger Company and the Fifteenth

Hune first appears as a commander recommended to Catherine by both Juniper and Hakram. She had captained Tiger Company at the War College and is already a practiced officer when Catherine brings her into the Fifteenth. Her presence anchors the legion’s command staff: she is a capable, patient planner whose bluntly practical approach contrasts with Nauk’s preference for aggressive assaults. (Chapters 31, 48–49)

Hune proves dependable through the early campaigns. She joins the fight at Marchford, personally takes the field with her ogres, and coordinates with Catherine after the battle. Her careful reports and willingness to speak plainly make her useful even when Catherine does not yet fully trust her. That distance is partly Catherine’s own choice: she recognizes that keeping the second-highest officer outside her inner circle risks making Hune a stranger by design. (Chapters 49–52, 57, 59, 66, 74, 83, 130–134)

General of Callow

After Nauk’s death, Hune becomes one of the senior generals in the Army of Callow. Catherine confirms her as the army’s senior general, and Hune brings the same measured command to the larger coalition campaigns. She advises against dividing forces when outnumbered, coordinates reports and casualties, and remains willing to ride beside Catherine despite their limited personal intimacy. Catherine trusts her professional judgment and understands that Hune’s loyalty to Callow is meaningful even if it is not personal devotion to Catherine. (Chapters 260–261, 269, 376, 381–384, 387, 394, 397)

During the final campaign, Hune is struck down by the Varlet. The poison in her blood reacts catastrophically with Catherine’s Night, killing her instantly. Her death is a military and personal loss: Catherine admits she had trusted Hune, while Pickler remembers her as one of the Fifteenth even though the two had never been friends. (Chapters 398, 403, 425, 471)

Appearance and personality

Hune is a towering ogre, broad enough to dominate a room, with a brutish face and patient, intelligent eyes. She carries herself with disciplined restraint and speaks softly despite her size. Her military judgment is cautious without being timid; she prefers sound logistics and defensible positions, and she will challenge plans she believes risk her troops needlessly. (Chapters 31, 49, 51–52, 121, 382–384)

Relationships

  • Catherine Foundling: Commander and monarch. Their relationship is built on professional trust rather than close friendship; Catherine later recognizes that Hune was “one of us” despite never fully bringing her into her inner circle. (Chapters 31, 130–134, 260–261, 425)

  • Juniper: Fellow senior commander and Hune’s superior in the Fifteenth’s early campaigns. Hune implements Juniper’s military plans and later works alongside her in the Army of Callow. (Chapters 49, 57, 66, 97, 391)

  • Nauk: Fellow legate whose aggressive command complements Hune’s careful approach. (Chapters 48–50, 121)

Abilities

Hune’s strength and size are those of an ogre, but the text emphasizes her judgment as a commander: she manages formations, fortifications, supply, and battlefield reports. No Name or supernatural advancement is established for her. (Chapters 31, 49, 134, 382–384)

Items

No distinct personal artifact is established for Hune . (Chapters 31, 49, and 398)
