Martha Hoya is a witch forced into Paul's pirate expedition. Her body contains the sealed Sea God's daughter Jenny and, later, an Alien Star candidate who failed to possess Jenny directly.

Biography

Reluctant witch aboard Paul's flagship

Martha joins Du Ge under coercive circumstances and openly condemns his reckless provocations, especially after he discards her gold and publicly declares that the witch should be shared. His ability to turn pursuit into chaos gradually replaces disbelief with alarmed respect. She supports the voyage with divination and practical witchcraft while still protesting decisions that expose her to pirates, navies, and supernatural enemies. (Chapters 145–168)

Martha's concern for Jenny and her attempt to seize the completed Destiny Sea Chart expose that her interests are not merely those of a hired witch. The later confrontation reveals the full reason: Martha's body is a vessel containing her own soul, the sealed Jenny, and a candidate trapped alongside them after a failed possession. The candidate can exploit flaws in the seal and eventually act through Jenny's form, but this does not erase Martha's distinct identity or make every action of the shared body hers. Appearance and personality

Martha is sharp-tongued, anxious about consequences, and protective of her property and survival. Her complaints often function as practical warnings, though curiosity and the influence surrounding Jenny keep her involved. (Chapters 145–151)

Magic and abilities

Martha practices witchcraft and uses a crystal ball to divine information, but the art is limited rather than an unrestricted source of answers. She also carries minor remedies and has unusually useful perception aboard ship. Her greatest supernatural significance is involuntary: her body acts as a container for sealed souls, and the weakened seal allows the foreign candidate limited access. The powers Jenny displays belong to Jenny or the possessing candidate, not to Martha's ordinary witchcraft. (Chapters 151–168 and 181)
