Puppet Chess
Puppet Chess is the war-chess set that Zuo Mo forges from rules and instructions supplied by Pu Yao. Its miniature illusion world lets players command simulated troops through consciousness, turning an argument about military theory into a practical contest. The set's brief use reveals Gongsun Cha's exceptional aptitude for command and helps redirect responsibility for Zuo Mo's forces toward the person best equipped to lead them. (Chapters 205–207)
History
War chess aboard the date seed ship
While the date seed ship travels beneath the Endless Ocean, Zuo Mo and Gongsun Cha argue over military tactics but cannot test their competing ideas with real troops. Pu Yao offers an alternative from his own era: war chess, a family of games whose rules can support contests between individual commanders or teams. He has no finished board to give them, so he transfers both the rules he remembers and instructions for making the games. Zuo Mo chooses the simpler Puppet Chess design rather than the larger, more demanding Seal Soldier Battle Board, then forges the set during the otherwise uneventful voyage. (Chapter 205)
The completed set surprises even its maker. Inside a circle one zhang across, linked illusions form a miniature world of mountains, rivers, changing clouds, rain, water levels, and inhabitants that continue cycling without a player's direct command. Each contestant places consciousness into a third-grade Black Daze crystal and receives nine yao troops, along with information about them and the ability to direct their movement or see through their eyes. The game's dense rules exhaust Zuo Mo but immediately absorb Gongsun Cha, making it both a simulation and an early measure of how differently the two men understand command. (Chapter 205)
Zuo Mo wins their first two matches, draws the next three, and loses the remaining five as Gongsun Cha improves with startling speed. Pu Yao then takes control and defeats Gongsun Cha more than twenty times, yet the repeated losses only make the younger man more excited and attentive. Zuo Mo recognizes that both opponents possess a commander's temperament that he lacks. In the next chapter, he gives the three Golden Armor Guards to Gongsun Cha because the Puppet Chess matches have exposed his talent, making the set's most important consequence the discovery and practical use of a future battle general. (Chapters 206–207)
The corpus does not document the set's use after the date seed ship journey, its transfer, its destruction, or its continued presence. It should therefore be treated as a short-lived training and diagnostic device in the recorded story, not as proof that later campaigns were literally planned on the same board. (Chapters 205–206)
Abilities and properties
- Self-cycling illusion terrain: Puppet Chess creates a detailed circular illusion world one zhang across. Its landscape includes mountains, rivers, weather, changing water levels, and autonomous inhabitants, allowing conditions to change while the players act. The text calls the set simpler than a Seal Soldier Battle Board but does not describe the forging materials or formations responsible for the effect. (Chapter 205)
- Consciousness interface: A player sends consciousness into a third-grade Black Daze crystal, receives information about nine yao units, commands their actions, and may observe the field through any unit's eyes. The documented match format gives each of the two players nine yao; other forces appear in the broader rules Pu Yao supplies, but the set is not shown fielding them. (Chapter 205)
- Commander training: The simulation supports repeated, nonlethal tactical contests and exposes differences in learning speed, aggression, and command judgment. It does not automatically teach mastery: Gongsun Cha improves by playing, Zuo Mo falls behind, and Pu Yao's experience overwhelms the novice. (Chapters 205–206)
- Known limits: Its rule set is complex enough to make Zuo Mo's head ache, and its battle pieces reflect Pu Yao's yaomo-oriented commander games, where xiuzhe usually appear as enemies or expendable troops. No grade, durability, portability limits, power cost, or later upgrades are documented. (Chapters 205–206)
Ownership and custody
| Holder or custodian | Relationship to the item |
|---|---|
| Zuo Mo | Forges the Puppet Chess set from Pu Yao's instructions and uses it for the first ten matches with Gongsun Cha. He is its only documented physical holder. |
| Gongsun Cha | Uses the set as a player; his rapid improvement reveals the command talent that changes his role in the group. He is not stated to own it. |
| Pu Yao | Supplies the remembered rules and construction method, then takes control during play to train and repeatedly defeat Gongsun Cha. He does not possess the physical set independently. |
