Inky Black Lotus

The Inky Black Lotus enters the story as a single fourth-grade seed brought to Zuo Mo for processing. Its shell resists ordinary flying swords and its released toxin contaminates Zuo Mo's Stalagmite Fire, turning a paid commission into both a dangerous forging test and the source of a later composite poison flame. The original seed never becomes his property. (Chapters 109–111, 161, and 202)

History

A dangerous processing commission

Three cultivators led by a red-robed man ask Zuo Mo to strip the hard coat from an entirely black lotus seed. They supply the seed and offer the complete fourth-grade Skyring Moon Chime Formation as payment. Zuo Mo initially lacks the ningmai cultivation expected for processing fourth-grade material, and the Three-Turn fire formation cannot affect it. He responds by devising a Four-Turn formation and using the fine ling-power control learned through Pu Yao's harsh training, but the successful opening releases enough toxin to poison his flame and place him in danger. (Chapters 109–110)

After the processing, Zuo Mo seals the seed in a jade bottle and the clients take it away. His material gain is the agreed formation scroll, which he later studies and uses in the Sword Test Conference and defensive formations. He does not knowingly retain part of the lotus. Only when another forging changes his fire does he discover that a thread of the poison remained inside the Stalagmite Fire and transformed into black flame. (Chapters 111, 129, and 139–142)

The residual toxin becomes one component of Inky Black Lava White Fire, alongside Stalagmite Fire and Lava Earth Fire. Because Zuo Mo prefers Golden Crow Fire and has no special interest in poison, he later splits the composite: the poison goes to the Rainbow Mark Butterfly and the fire portion to Lil' Pagoda. This ends the documented connection between the processed lotus and his active fire seed; later custody of the clients' original seed is not stated. (Chapters 161, 181, and 202)

Abilities and properties

• Exceptionally hard shell: An ordinary flying sword cannot cut the seed's outer coat, and even a Three-Turn fire formation produces no change. Successful processing requires a more complex Four-Turn fire arrangement and precise control. (Chapters 109–110)
• Potent toxin: Opening the seed releases poison powerful enough to infect Zuo Mo's Stalagmite Fire. The corpus does not quantify a dose, antidote, or direct effect on an ordinary victim, so the danger should not be generalized beyond the documented forging incident. (Chapters 109–110 and 161)
• Poison-flame transformation: Residual toxin turns into a thin black fire and joins Zuo Mo's white and red flames as Inky Black Lava White Fire. This is a derived composite created through contamination and later forging, not a fire that the intact seed visibly emits on its own. (Chapters 161 and 202)
• Transferable poison component: Zuo Mo can separate the poison from the composite fire and feed it to the Rainbow Mark Butterfly. The scene documents a practical use of the residue, not continued possession of the lotus seed. (Chapter 202)
