Xie Shan

Xie Shan is a sword xiu who enters Zuo Mo's faction as a defeated local leader and becomes one of its earliest jindan experts. His unusually deep ling-power reserves, Aurora sword essence, practical judgment, and eventual loyalty make him useful in roles ranging from field command and intelligence work to personal protection and high-level combat.

Biography

From captured leader to trusted officer

Xie Shan first leads roughly sixty ningmai xiuzhe at Stone Door Beach and has a fearsome local reputation, but he does not mistake personal strength for victory when Gongsun Cha's coordinated charge breaks his force. He surrenders because he recognizes that the opposing troop is better organized, accepts the jinzhi imposed on the captives, and initially studies the new hierarchy with a former leader's concern for status. When Ma Fan secretly needs help killing a hidden scout, Xie Shan reads the improvised “spar” correctly, suppresses his pride, and cooperates without exposing the deception. The encounter also strips away his remaining tendency to judge comrades by cultivation alone: Ma Fan's confidence and sword essence convince him that the troop's established core has strengths that rank cannot measure. His local knowledge and social experience soon become more valuable than his captive status. He identifies Venerable Chi's base and subordinates, assesses wounds after the Kong Brothers' attack, and serves near Gongsun Cha during the reprisals. Chosen to lead the covert Nan Sheng Village mission, he uses an old business connection to recruit Bao Yi and deliberately thinks beyond his assigned search for city builders, hoping to bring Zuo Mo another capable specialist. Although he once wanted achievements mainly to raise his position and obtain Golden Crow Fire, repeated battles and the better life provided by the group change that calculation into genuine allegiance. He grows confident enough to lead elite missions, yet accepts correction after his spectacular Rainbow Mirage Light exposes the unit too early. By the defense of Golden Crow City, he is among those ordered to preserve Zuo Mo if the city falls; after the escape from Little Mountain Jie, his concern for Zuo Mo and the faction's future is no longer merely enforced obedience. Core formation and the ancient battlefield

When a jindan opponent suppresses the group in Sky Water Jie, Xie Shan is the one member close enough to core formation to force his sword scripture against the pressure, though the attempt injures him and demonstrates the gulf he has not yet crossed. Soon afterward, his years of accumulated ling power trigger core formation in Hundred Flower Valley. The breakthrough removes the jinzhi's practical hold over him and gives him a natural opportunity to leave. Instead, he immediately bows to Zuo Mo and explicitly asks to continue following him, turning a relationship born in defeat into a voluntary commitment. His new rank moves him out of Sky Peak Platoon and into service as one of Zuo Mo's personal guards. (Chapters 308 and 322–325)

The ancient battlefield tests that commitment through an environment that corrodes ordinary ling power and through enemies beyond the group's previous experience. Xie Shan cultivates Fiend Ling to endure the mist, serves as rear guard, watches over companions during dangerous breakthroughs, and follows Wei Sheng's instruction because he knows his own core formation came from long accumulation rather than refined understanding. He joins the strongest fighters against fiend soul beasts and the fiend corpse's hunting pack, then chooses to remain outside the transport boats during the Golden Crystal sandstorm so that the ordeal can temper his unstable new cultivation. These experiences make him a senior protector rather than simply the faction's highest reservoir of power: he reacts to threats, holds assigned directions, and places collective survival above the prestige that preoccupied him when he first joined. Turtle Island's sword instructor and defender

After the group reaches Cloud Sea Jie, Zuo Mo gives Xie Shan the Paired Mirage Swords, a matched set designed around his Aurora sword essence. Xie Shan treats the gift as both a fortuitous weapon and a mark of trust. At Turtle Island he helps convert personal mastery into institutional strength, teaching sword-cultivation classes alongside Wei Sheng and joining the island's senior experts in maintaining order among incoming combat xiu. In battle he is repeatedly used where immediate force matters: he breaks a hostile formation at Zuo Mo's directions, fights other jindan, joins the short-range charge that warns opportunists away from Turtle Island, and expends virtually all his ling power to pull Yuan Xin's Skanda Staff away from Zong Ru. That rescue leaves him unable to stand, but prevents a killing blow and shows how far his priorities have moved from protecting his own status to protecting the faction's people. Intelligence, deterrence, and the Tian Huan counterattack

As the faction expands beyond Turtle Island, Xie Shan also performs intelligence work. He returns exhausted but excited with a detailed comparison of three chaos rifts, giving Gongsun Cha the information needed to choose a route toward the mo territories and reinforce Zuo Mo. Later, when a Tian Huan emissary arrogantly demands an answer from Gongsun Cha's forces, Xie Shan obeys the order to kill him immediately. The Paired Mirage Swords defeat the envoy's protective seals in two linked attacks, and the execution helps establish that Gongsun Cha's battalion will not be intimidated by Tian Huan's reputation. Much later, Xie Shan emerges from seclusion as Mo Cloud Sea prepares a coordinated counterattack against Tian Huan. The text does not state what cultivation stage or new power he gained there, but Gongsun Cha treats his return as part of the manpower needed for the operation. At his latest appearance, Xie Shan is assigned with Nan Yue and other experts to accompany the old man's assault on the Yao Forging Tower, both to protect the mission's leader and to manage the dangerous prisoners they intend to release. His final documented role therefore remains consistent with the path he chose after core formation: a trusted expert deployed where Mo Cloud Sea needs both force and reliability. Appearance and personality

The corpus does not give Xie Shan a sustained physical description. His most consistent visual motif comes from his cultivation: five-colored or rainbow sword energies circle him, spread like an aurora, or condense around his paired golden swords. His emotions are usually easy to read in a scene—he smiles to manage a new hierarchy, becomes openly excited by a suitable sword, and shows visible anger when his people or weapon are threatened—but these are behavioral observations rather than fixed physical traits. (Chapters 228, 242, 394, 424, and 444)

Xie Shan is practical, socially adept, and candid about relative strength. That pragmatism first makes him surrender and seek a place in the new troop, but it also lets him recognize skill without clinging to rank: he revises his opinion of Ma Fan, seeks guidance from Wei Sheng, and acknowledges the limitations of his accumulation-based breakthrough. He is initially status-conscious and eager to prove himself, sometimes overcommitting spectacular power, yet experience makes him increasingly loyal and team-oriented. He retains a competitive and occasionally humorous edge, but repeatedly answers danger by acting for the group rather than protecting his own standing. Abilities and cultivation

Xie Shan is a sword xiu whose combat style combines exceptionally large ling-power reserves with multicolored Aurora sword essence. His greatest demonstrated strengths are sustained output, broad-area suppression, and the ability to turn that stored power into a decisive straight-line attack; the corpus also shows that extreme expenditure can leave him depleted or unconscious.

Ling-power cultivation and core formation

At his introduction, Xie Shan is at ningmai third stratum and already regarded as a first-rate expert in Little Mountain Jie. His internal reserve later proves to be about 180 jing, nearly twice the minimum associated with that stratum. This abundance allows him to use expensive sword moves more freely than most ningmai, but it is not an automatic answer to superior technique or coordinated battle: Gongsun Cha defeats his group, Ma Fan can match him in a controlled exchange, and a jindan's suppression reverses his ling power and injures him before his breakthrough. His jindan core forms primarily through long accumulation rather than a sudden technical insight. The five-colored apparition draws in an enormous amount of ambient ling power, and afterward his reserves continue to grow rapidly; by the Ren-family battle, the narration places him at roughly 800 jing, near the upper range of first-stratum jindan. This gives him enough raw power to contend with older jindan and to force his way out of restraints, but it does not make him the group's most refined sword xiu. He has not reached sword-essence manifestation when Ma Fan does, and studying Clear Sky Sword Scripture produces limited gains because it does not suit him particularly well. Aurora Mirage Sword and Rainbow Mirage Light

The fifth-grade Aurora Mirage Sword scripture produces multicolored sword energies carrying an icy presence. Xie Shan can spread them as fine, nearly invisible strands that pressure and entangle a target, fill a confined area with dense cutting force, or condense them into a massive aurora sword. His control is precise enough to stage a convincing duel with Ma Fan while secretly coordinating an attack on a hidden scout, but a target with superior concealment can initially escape his notice. (Chapter 228)

Rainbow Mirage Light is the scripture's largest demonstrated area attack. It raises an aurora-like curtain and breaks it into a rain of five-colored sword essence that can cover a crowd, interfere with movement through its locking pressure, corrode ling shields, and destroy multiple opponents. At ningmai, it consumes about 150 jing—most of Xie Shan's 180-jing reserve—so using it leaves him with little power for a second fight and can create tactical problems even after it succeeds. His decision to unleash it at Nan Sheng Village wins overwhelmingly but exposes the covert team, showing both the technique's scale and the danger of using it without restraint. (Chapters 247–248)

Paired Mirage Sword techniques

The Paired Mirage Swords are an upper fifth-grade matched set, one long and one short, whose formations include Sky Breaking, Rainbow Mist, Light Rush, and Gold Strands. They are explicitly suited to Xie Shan's Aurora sword essence. He normally sends the swords as intertwined rainbow or golden lights: the larger strike can smash a defender's ling armor or seals while the smaller sword follows through the opening, as it does against Tian Huan's envoy. The pair can also generate a seven-colored defensive shell and divide into thousands of fine sword-energy strands for binding or deflection. (Chapters 424, 443–444, 466, 469, and 586)

Their strongest shown output draws directly on Xie Shan's enormous reserve. Against Third Ren, he channels all his ling power into the swords, activates all four formations, merges their light, and drives a narrow beam through a mass of fire birds and their controller. The attack defeats the opposing technique, but the collision nearly kills him and leaves him unconscious with no ling power remaining. Against Yuan Xin's Skanda Throw, the same willingness to spend everything lets thousands of softened strands wrap the heavy staff and pull it just far enough away from Zong Ru; again, the cost leaves Xie Shan barely able to stand. His raw power therefore gives the paired style exceptional breaking and rescue potential, while exhaustion remains its clearest demonstrated limitation. (Chapters 444 and 469)

Fiend Ling and battlefield skills

In the ancient battlefield, Xie Shan practices Fiend Ling with Vermillion Bird Camp. At the group's documented level, the method protects them from the corrosive fiendish mist and can slowly convert some of it into ling power, but it does not replenish power quickly enough for unrestricted combat; direct, efficient conversion is associated with a later third level that the text does not explicitly confirm Xie Shan reaches. He also has extensive command and reconnaissance experience: he can assess injuries, recognize local threats, cultivate contacts, investigate terrain and chaos rifts, and execute Gongsun Cha's short-range charge tactics with little delay. These skills make him useful even when a problem cannot be solved by sword power alone. (Chapters 234–242, 286, 340, 360, 561, and 586)

After reaching jindan, Xie Shan chooses to remain, serves as a personal guard, and treats the Paired Mirage Swords Zuo Mo gives him as a profound mark of trust. • Gongsun Cha: Gongsun Cha defeats and incorporates Xie Shan, then repeatedly uses his experience as a leader, local guide, intelligence officer, and high-level executioner.
