Lin Yuan

Lin Yuan is Ling Ying Sect's eldest disciple and the heir or member of a wealthy merchant clan whose support gives him unusual status within the sect. His principal strength in the supplied scenes is social and material influence rather than demonstrated combat skill.

Lin Yuan steps forward during Zuo Mo's challenge with supporters, a fourth-grade sword, and confidence that wealth and rank guarantee victory. He offers Zuo Mo the first three moves, only for the first use of Flowing Water to place a sword point at his neck. Terrified, Lin surrenders without completing an attack and lets Zuo choose a talisman. Zuo takes the Moonwater Black Turtle Armor rather than the more valuable sect-bestowed sword, preserving enough of Lin's face for him to recast the defeat as generous sportsmanship. (Chapters 96–97)

Lin then proposes an hour of recovery between Zuo Mo's matches. The rule sounds fair and earns public approval, but he privately wants later challengers weakened by the armor he surrendered and unable to eclipse him with a victory. He supplies a Red Flower Dan when Chang Heng demands one, relaxes after learning Zuo Mo has sword essence, and narrates the later climax to other disciples. (Chapters 97–101)

Appearance and personality

Lin Yuan has a well-maintained, pale neck and carries himself with raised chin and conspicuous pride, compared to an arrogant rooster. He is vain, wealthy, politically adept, and quick to protect reputation. Fear makes him surrender immediately, but he recovers socially by giving instructions, praising his opponent, and proposing a popular rule that also serves his private interests. (Chapters 96–101)

Abilities and cultivation

No cultivation realm or named personal scripture is given. Lin can control the rare fourth-grade Yang Emperor Sword despite being a lower-level disciple, but his only shown match ends before he launches an attack. His practical ability is factional: merchant-family wealth attracts dependents and the family's aid gives him special sect status. (Chapters 96–99)

His combat limitation is decisive. He fails to read or stop Zuo Mo's first sword move, freezes in terror, and is explicitly considered weaker than Wen Fei. Expensive equipment does not compensate for the skill gap. (Chapters 96–97)
