Order Obelisk

The Order Obelisks are stone interfaces distributed through the Order's headquarters. Most serve members by presenting individualized menus, missions, rewards, and transport, while the ancient Obelisk of Authority and its official miniature copy govern appointments and emergency executive power.

History

The headquarters interface

When Daneel Anivron enters Order Headquarters, he finds enormous floating obelisks over the marketplace and smaller terminals sized for several simultaneous users. Approaching one produces a transparent display that scans the member and supplies a customized menu. Common entries concern power, missions, and rewards, while exclusive entries can reflect an individual's needs and history; this personalization also makes the menu a source of intelligence about what the Order knows. (Chapters 785–788)

Members gather at an obelisk to accept missions and are transported to simulations or remote mission environments. The same infrastructure records teams, returns participants, delivers messages, and dispenses earned rewards, including physical objects. These conveniences depend on the Order's governing system and Overseer: the terminals are interfaces to a larger institution, not independent omniscient artefacts. Their mission simulations can be dangerous and psychologically invasive even when the obelisk itself is only the point of entry and exit. (Chapters 789–849)

The Obelisk of Authority

The Order's emergency rules use a distinct ancient Obelisk of Authority. Five Heroes can testify and activate the wartime process, after which the Overseer swears to act for Angaria and receives executive powers that bypass most normal restrictions. A person completely bound to the Order holds a miniature official copy used for appointments and transfers; Cain carries this copy and tries to use it when the false Overseer's betrayal becomes clear. Later, the ancient obelisk is activated to transfer the Overseer role to Daneel, placing its wartime clause behind his authority over Order members. (Chapters 886, 894, and 1008)

The system remains useful after that transfer: an obelisk stands in the Overseer's room when the sovereigns meet the Head of the Order. Its oath mechanism is nevertheless not unbeatable. The Church finds a way around previous Order oaths, which is why Eloise later prefers the fully awakened Emperor's Oath Artefact when testing captured families. (Chapters 1014 and 1038)

Abilities and properties

  • Headquarters obelisks scan members and display personalized mission, reward, power, title, and message interfaces. Some rewards or entries can be hidden, conditional, or tailored to the viewer. (Chapters 786–788 and 843–848)
  • They transport registered teams into missions and simulations, return survivors, record completion, and release rewards. The obelisk is the access point; the surrounding Order system performs the larger operation. (Chapters 789–796 and 809–838)
  • The ancient Obelisk of Authority validates testimony, transfers the Overseer office, and activates emergency executive powers after its prescribed procedure. An official miniature copy is required for appointments and power transfer. (Chapters 886 and 894)
  • Wartime authority can compel obedience under Order rules, but manipulated administrators and circumvented oaths show that procedure and intent remain exploitable weaknesses. (Chapters 886–894, 1008, and 1038)
