Emperor's Oath Artefact

The Emperor's Oath Artefact is Emperor Fenoras's safeguard for binding Heroes to Angaria. For most of the modern era it operates in a restricted, dormant state under the Big Four; when awakened, its spirit, Angelica, manifests the artefact's original purpose as a weapon capable of consuming enormous power to slay Heroes.

History

Foundation of the Big Four's loyalty system

Every Hero produced through the Big Four's Willstone system is made to swear loyalty to Angaria through the artefact. Ordinary oath bonds can be dismantled by people at Champion and Hero level given time, so this stronger enforcement is the foundation that lets the Big Four create Heroes without inviting immediate defection to the Church. It still judges the literal substance of an oath rather than every possible intention: a Hero can cooperate with the Church while rationalizing that a particular act does not yet constitute betrayal, leaving exploitable grey areas. The active custodian is normally the Head of the Order, who carries the artefact on his body. Generations of Heads and High Council members place formations around it so that a custodian not personally accepted by the artefact can use its oath function only with the relevant collective permission. Its bearer also gains extraordinary survivability, but the source does not present that endurance as limitless. The restrictions preserve institutional control while keeping the artefact's original spirit and combat function dormant. (Chapters 721 and 846)

Daneel awakens Angelica

Daneel Anivron needs an oath that can bind treacherous Heroes, so he uses the enthralled Head's custody and temporarily restored memories of Fenoras to reach the artefact's true spirit. Recognition by its original owner allows Angelica to break the later formations that restrain her, giving Daneel the right to employ the artefact beyond its routine oath function. He first uses that authority to form a Hero corps from captives who had chosen betrayal. (Chapters 846–847)

During the Church's assault, Angelica manifests as an oversized sword. It burns a struck Hero from within, draws the smoke, ash, and flesh into itself, and leaves wounds that continue spreading unless actively restrained with the victim's magic. The price is equally severe: each decisive strike requires the power and body of an allied Hero as a sacrifice, and the sword becomes almost impossibly heavy for Daneel even in a giant composite form. He kills or cripples many enemy Heroes this way, but exhausts the allied bodies sustaining the weapon. (Chapters 989–991 and 996)

Truth oaths after unification

After the battle, Daneel receives permission to use the artefact fully rather than returning it to dormancy. Eloise plans to use oaths sworn to its awakened state to force captured members of a suspect family to speak truthfully, distinguishing willing traitors from those denied a real choice. She chooses it over the Order's obelisk because the Church has already shown a method for bypassing the latter's oath structure. This is the artefact's latest confirmed application; the plan relies on its stronger compulsion, not on another mass activation of Angelica's sacrificial sword. (Chapter 1038)

Abilities and properties

• Its dormant institutional function accepts and enforces Hero-level oaths that ordinary oath magic cannot reliably secure, making it central to the Big Four's Willstone advancement model. Grey wording and self-justifying conduct can still create gaps between formal loyalty and actual allegiance. (Chapters 712 and 846)
• Later formations restrict use to approved institutional purposes, but recognition by Fenoras's restored consciousness lets the resident artefact spirit break those restraints. This is a special ownership interaction, not a general method available to any bearer. (Chapter 846)
• Awakened as Angelica, it becomes a sword whose wounds burn and spread, forcing even Heroes to devote power to containment. Minor contact can cause serious lasting injury. (Chapters 989–991 and 996)
• Full combat use consumes allied Hero bodies or equivalent power as a sacrifice and produces a weapon so heavy that Daneel struggles to control it. Its lethality is therefore purchased with severe losses rather than freely repeatable. (Chapters 989–991)
• Fully awakened oaths can compel truthful testimony despite preparations intended to conceal it, at least according to Eloise's informed plan. This does not establish unrestricted mind reading; the target must still swear the oath. (Chapter 1038)
