Safiros
Safiros is the last king of Axelor, an authoritarian ruler whose appetite for purges and promised power makes him a willing partner and host for Arnold.
Biography
Purges, possession, and death
Safiros enters the Olympics as Axelor's aggressive ruler, even disguising himself as an athlete to secure victory and maiming opponents while staying within the literal rules. Back in Axelor he isolates citizens through propaganda and treats purges as both policy and personal satisfaction. Desperate to increase public satisfaction enough to unlock the Empire Spirit's third seal, he instead plans staged Lanthanorian attacks that will justify further mass punishment. (Chapters 317–342 and 533–577)
Arnold promises Safiros victory in the Race, a powerful Champion Path, longer life, and eventual command of the continent. Safiros therefore allows the Empire Spirit to use his body and helps invade the Black Raven Kingdom. Daneel turns Axelor's citizens against him and maneuvers the confrontation so that Safiros dies while partially possessed. Because that form of possession ties part of Arnold's consciousness to the host, Safiros's death also incapacitates the immediate Empire Spirit threat. (Chapters 578–597)
Appearance and personality
Safiros wears royal robes and later carries multiple defensive trinkets when dressed for war. He is volatile, cruel, suspicious, and obsessed with forcing obedience. His calm planning is often more dangerous than his rages because it converts the desire for violence into state policy. (Chapters 317–342, 533, and 556)
Abilities and power
Safiros is an Exalted Human and capable combatant who uses fire, a conjured sword, athletic speed, and high-grade defensive equipment. He has not yet earned the Champion Path Arnold promises him, so that future power cannot be treated as acquired. When Arnold is in control, the body can deploy the Empire Spirit's mind attacks and formation knowledge, but those are Arnold's abilities expressed through Safiros as host. The arrangement gives Safiros access to stronger plans while exposing him to the fatal limitation of partial possession; his own power ends with his death. (Chapters 340–342 and 578–597)
Relationships
- Arnold: Safiros willingly cooperates for power and rule, while Arnold uses him as both kingly cover and a possessed body.
- Daneel Anivron: Safiros sees Daneel as a rival conqueror; Daneel exposes Axelor's reality to its people and engineers his defeat.
- Faxul: Safiros tries to subjugate Faxul and the Black Raven Kingdom, turning their confrontation into the arena for Daneel's counterplan.
Items
Safiros carries defensive trinkets and armor-like robes during the Black Raven confrontation, but no single possession is established as a unique signature item.
