Protector Raven

Protector Raven is the living guardian beast of the Black Raven Kingdom, charged with recognizing a rightful ruler and protecting the kingdom rather than serving any claimant automatically.

Biography

Imprisonment, bond, and restored authority

The Protector Raven is sealed away by the old regime despite its duty to judge royal legitimacy. Faxul and Daneel Anivron free it and create a voluntary bond between Raven and ruler, allowing its public emergence to validate Faxul's accession. The relationship gives the new king authority grounded in the kingdom's sacred guardian rather than only victory over his father. (Chapters 259–285 and 298)

During the struggle with the ancient Black Raven Empire Spirit, forced control gravely injures the Protector Raven's consciousness and leaves it comatose. Faxul temporarily imitates it during a public ceremony, but the real Raven later awakens and personally acknowledges Daneel, compelling conservative councilors to accept the new alliance. Its recovery turns an institutional symbol back into an acting guardian. (Chapters 576–603)

Appearance and personality

The Protector Raven is an enormous black raven capable of carrying a rider and dominating a throne room through its presence. It is affectionate with Faxul, enjoys being stroked, and expresses approval or displeasure through calls, posture, and the mental bond. Its loyalty is deliberate rather than docile. (Chapters 259, 298, and 597–603)

Abilities and power

The Raven is explicitly a Warrior-level beast. It can fly at great speed, physically defend against a king's attack, support or dispel teleportation-locking effects through its bond, and communicate mentally with Faxul. The modified bonding spell does not require a harvested body part and includes a consensual control back door, but its safety still depends on the beast's assent. Stronger consciousness interference can overwhelm that protection and cause a coma, as the ancient Empire Spirit demonstrates. Its latest appearance confirms recovery and active judgment, not a new formal realm. (Chapters 259–285, 317–319, and 597–603)

Relationships

  • Faxul: The Raven shares a voluntary royal bond with Faxul and has cared for him since childhood.
  • Daneel Anivron: Daneel helps free and bond it, later earning its personal acknowledgment before the Black Raven council.
  • The Black Raven Empire Spirit: The ancient consciousness forcibly uses the Raven and leaves it gravely injured, separating the living guardian from the hostile legacy bearing a similar title.

Items

The Protector Raven's royal bond relies on specialized formation work, but the Raven has no individually carried signature item.
