Alistair

Alistair, also spelled Alastair, is the ancient Basilisk who founded the Hidden Kill Sect before leaving Angaria and later became one of the TriCobra Sect's three leaders. A Saint-level figure by Church terminology, she supports Daneel Anivron because of a prophecy while secretly retaining extreme hostility toward him. (Chapters 956–1164)

Biography

Angaria's exiled Basilisk returns as a dangerous ally

Before the Apocalypse, Alistair is the last of the Great Serpent's line, the Emperor's Hidden Battle Queen, and a Godbeast who defeats rivals by fair and unfair means. She creates the Hidden Kill Sect as her surviving legacy, then uses old boons owed by Emperor Fenoras to escape a death sentence for intended wartime betrayal, preserve her lesser descendants, and erase knowledge of her crimes. Millennia later she leads part of the TriCobra Sect and contacts Daneel after confirming that he inherited her legacy. She recognizes him as the prophesied “pet Basilisk,” but her alliance is calculated, remote, and never equivalent to trust. (Chapters 956–959, 1078–1081)

Alistair sends three assassins and orders them to obey Daneel, yet the delegation also receives instructions to seize a key Artefact through subterfuge. She personally saves Angaria's Heroes from a disguised Church force by acting through a distant conduit, a feat that leaves her exhausted, then provides detailed intelligence on the Church's invasion. Daneel discovers that her desire to kill him exceeds his system's scale, but keeps the prophecy and mutual benefit between them. During the final war she and the other TriCobra Monarchs intervene when Daneel engineers circumstances that damage a Church Saint and protect their investment. At the endpoint she remains alive outside Angaria, ready to carry Daneel to the sect's hidden base. (Chapters 1009–1017, 1030, 1070, 1078–1090, 1125, 1156–1157, and 1164)

Appearance and personality

Alistair can take human or serpentine form. Her true body combines a cobra's broad head with an anaconda's thick body; multicolored radiance flows beneath her skin and spills through her eyes, and in motion she can appear as a mountain-sized Basilisk. She is ancient, theatrical, vain, sarcastic, and quick to anger. Praise readily pleases her, but Daneel repeatedly sees cunning and lethal animosity beneath her claim of alliance. Abilities and power

Alistair is a TriCobra Monarch, equivalent to a Church Saint and far above Peak Heroes. Her physical speed exceeds sound almost instantly, her Godbeast form is enormous, and her gaze alone creates a primal fear response. She also uses Dimensional Magic to project herself across vast distance, scan consciousnesses, conceal her presence from ordinary detection, communicate through another body, and move forces over the Endless Sea. These effects demand extraordinary power: maintaining a distant connection is difficult, and saving Angaria requires a Saint-level conduit who must recover for years. Her power is paired with the TriCobra Sect's assassination network. She identifies the Church's hidden strike, supplies near-individual-level army data, and can order specialist agents and Artefacts into Angaria. Yet political limits matter: exposure can invite another Saint to attack her sect, and after direct intervention the TriCobra leaders state they can offer no further battlefield help. Her latest demonstrated role is therefore transport and strategic patronage, not unrestricted domination of Angaria's final conflict. (Chapters 1030, 1090, 1125, 1156–1157, and 1164)

Relationships

• Daneel Anivron: Alistair calls Daneel her pet and protects him as the subject of a prophecy, but secretly wants him dead. Their alliance survives because each repeatedly makes the other's success materially useful. (Chapters 957–1010, 1070–1090, and 1156–1164)
• Emperor Fenoras: She once served as his Hidden Battle Queen and saved him before his rise. Their bond lets her detect him across distance, but their history also includes her betrayal and the three boons she uses to escape judgment and erase herself from Angarian memory. (Chapters 956–957 and 1078–1081)
• Husare: Husare descends from Alistair's privileged line and leads the assassins she sends to Angaria. Alistair's order that the delegation obey Daneel is the legal basis of their reluctant service. (Chapters 1018 and 1030)

• Hidden Kill inheritance: Alistair leaves the Hidden Kill Sect and its Basilisk-linked arts as her Angarian legacy. Daneel's possession of that inheritance is central to her recognition of him. (Chapters 956–957)
