Alfonso

Alfonso, called Alfonso the Wrangler, is a Sect of Hedon administrator who uses his authority over the Border Village to coerce and torture women. His greed and fear of aging allow Daneel Anivron, acting as Travis, to remove him without a direct fight.

Biography

Exploitation and the false Ker Gem mine

Alfonso holds a neglected administrative post that gives him power over the payments and livelihoods of more than a hundred women in the Border Village. He turns delayed wages, fees, threats, and carefully concealed torture into a private system of control, confident that victims will be too frightened to testify. Daneel therefore approaches him as Travis with a fabricated Ker Gem mine worth two hundred thousand gems. Alfonso's desire to reach Peak Warrior and then Champion outweighs suspicion: he resigns, recommends Travis as his successor, swears secrecy, and begins absorbing the mine's false Energy. A prearranged tip brings two Champions, and the apparent evidence, his unexplained wealth, and the villagers' testimony lead the Sect to imprison him for fifty years. (Chapters 441–447)

Appearance and personality

Alfonso is a bald older man whose administrative comfort contrasts with his cultivated power. He is sadistic toward people unable to resist him, taking pleasure in begging and control, yet cautious enough to use hidden exits, anti-eavesdropping formations, and a Champion-level defense when wealth is at stake. Greed and terror of a limited lifespan ultimately override that caution, making the promise of advancement the opening Daneel needs. (Chapters 441–446)

Abilities and power

Alfonso is an Exalted Warrior Mage one step below Peak Warrior. He can fly, cast light, combine metal and fire for torture, heal injuries to conceal evidence, and operate privacy and defensive formations. He also carries an unnamed Champion-level defensive trinket, but admits that he cannot defeat even one Champion directly and surrenders when two immobilize him. His power therefore sustains coercion over ordinary humans but offers no answer to higher-realm enforcement or a scheme that turns his secrecy against him. (Chapters 441–446)

Relationships

• Daneel Anivron / Travis: Daneel uses the Travis identity to present Alfonso with the exact bargain he cannot resist. Alfonso believes their oath protects the mine, while Daneel's preparations and automated tip exploit the wording to engineer his arrest. (Chapters 443–447)
• The women of the Border Village: Alfonso delays their payments and uses economic dependency to demand access to their bodies, torturing resistance while healing visible marks. Once he is restrained, their testimony helps convert rumor into a prison sentence. (Chapters 441–446)
