Zhong's favorable examination draw lets him place third without meeting several stronger contenders, and his early monolith breakthrough encourages Scholartree Manor to believe he can surpass Chen and Gou. Their later achievements expose that expectation as premature, leaving Zhong cold and resentful but also under pressure to justify his reputation. Within a year he reaches peak Ethereal Opening and fourth on the Proclamation of Golden Distinction, rushes with his sword to oppose danger at Mount Han, and later enters Star Condensation. Gou Hanshi can still force him to withdraw, but Zhong's sustained progress ensures that being overshadowed does not become disappearance. (Chapters 182–220, 549–593, and 862)

Appearance and personality

Zhong is a young scholar with a cold face and a dreary, competitive temperament. He resents humiliation but is not blindly controlled by his elders; at South Stream Temple he asks direct questions rather than joining a vice principal's attempt to shame Mount Li. (Chapters 549–588 and 884)

Abilities and cultivation

He breaks into Ethereal Opening while studying a monolith, reaches that realm's peak within a year, and later joins the unusually young Star Condensation cohort.
