Mountain Man Yanzhi

Mountain Man Yanzhi is one of the Eight Great Mountain Men, ancient demon experts who make a final attempt to reverse their race's declining fortunes before the northern war. (Chapters 1125–1129)

Biography

The last stand on the grassland

Mountain Man Yanzhi joins Mountain Men Jingbo and Yichun in Black Robe's trap, confronting Chen Changsheng, Xu Yourong, and their allies before the main war begins. His mountain power can resist the Tong Palace and South Stream Temple sword array for a time, but Xiao Zhang breaks the momentum on which that power depends, allowing the human experts to defeat him. Mortally wounded, Yanzhi admits that the broader momentum of the world has already turned against the demons. He stops Jingbo and Yichun from taking revenge and sends them toward the Abyssal Sea, choosing to end the Eight Great Mountain Men's mission without spending their lives on a lost fight. He then dies at peace with having done his utmost. (Chapters 1125–1132)

Appearance and personality

Yanzhi speaks in a deep voice that trembles with suppressed anger after his mountain is broken. Near death, starlight makes his face and lips ghastly white. He is proud and loyal to the demon cause, yet lucid enough to acknowledge defeat and prevent younger companions from dying for vengeance. (Chapters 1129 and 1132)

Abilities and cultivation

Yanzhi wields mountain-like force whose effectiveness depends on momentum: terrain, mass, and the larger fortune supporting his side. He can pressure powerful arrays, but once Xiao Zhang breaks that momentum and Chen Changsheng and Xu Yourong commit to killing him, the defense fails.
