Biography

The overseer's removal

Mei Chuan greets the returning Chen Changsheng with perfect ecclesiastical etiquette and calmly asserts the authority of his administrative position. His gentle speech and nonservile bearing make clear that he is not merely a clerk but the institutional obstacle deliberately placed inside the academy. Before Tang Thirty-Six can confront him, however, Mei meets Xu Yourong in the forest. She kills him and leaves his corpse outside the hall, forcing the Orthodoxy's leaders to face an accomplished decision rather than negotiate his continued authority. Xu later explains that Tang's own methods would not have allowed Mei to live, framing her act as both removal of the obstruction and a choice made on Tang's behalf. (Chapters 1050–1057)
