Bai Hai
Bai Hai is a violent Setting Sun Sect elder who begins cultivating late in life and reaches Ethereal Opening through scholarly comprehension. (Chapters 284–285)
Biography
The gamble for Phoenix blood
After years in officialdom, Bai Hai concludes that orthodox cultivation begun at his age cannot reach its peak, so he gambles on the Setting Sun Sect's methods and advances to Ethereal Opening within twenty years. In the Garden of Zhou, his search for the lost earthfire-crystal sword and Sword Pool gives way to a more reckless opportunity: he hunts the wounded Xu Yourong to consume her Heavenly Phoenix true blood. Xu deliberately removes her final defense and lets him drink, knowing Nanke's poison remains in her blood. Bai ignores the apparently helpless Chen Changsheng, who pushes him aside as the poison takes effect, and dies because the power he sought is also the vehicle of Xu's trap. (Chapters 284–288)
Appearance and personality
Bai Hai is an old man with an elderly face, later mottled by poison. He is learned and capable of rueful reflection, but also cruel, bloodthirsty, and excited by the extremity of his own plan; that excitement keeps him alert against Xu's direct attacks while blinding him to her willingness to lose deliberately. (Chapters 284–288)
Abilities and cultivation
Bai reaches Ethereal Opening rapidly because his broad erudition gives him exceptional comprehension of the Dao. He possesses violent Setting Sun Sect strength and can track Xu Yourong while maintaining a peak combat state. His method cannot protect him from poison taken voluntarily into his body, and his fixation on Phoenix blood causes him to disregard Chen as a threat. (Chapters 284–288)
