Roth

Biography

Joining the inheritance expedition

Roth is a newly advanced level 3 acolyte when he joins Leylin Farlier, Jayden, Shaya, and Bosain in searching for Great Magus Serholm's inheritance. Within the temporary party he ranks below the artifact-bearing members in visible strength, but remains neither submissive nor arrogant. That composure leads Leylin to suspect he has concealed a method capable of narrowing the gap. (Chapters 104–105)

When hostile acolytes ambush the expedition, Roth reveals that method. A radical body modification replaces his missing-looking arm with grey-white tentacles and covers part of his face in green scales. He pursues the last fleeing enemy, kills him, and brings back both the severed head and a map that confirms another group was following the same inheritance trail. The discovery increases the party's urgency and demonstrates that Roth is more capable than his lack of a visible artifact suggested. (Chapters 106–107)

Dylan Gardens and death

Roth uses the transformation for practical movement as well as fighting, extending the tentacles to climb during the approach to the hidden plane. He then volunteers quickly once the party confirms that a Beta Daisy lets a falling person enter the inheritance site safely. His willingness to commit helps carry the expedition forward, although disagreements with Jayden show that the five remain competitors cooperating for a prize rather than trusted companions. (Chapters 108–110)

Inside Dylan Gardens, a Black Horrall Snake attacks before the group can exploit the inheritance. Roth meets it with his physical transformation, but the creature is far beyond a level 3 acolyte: it tears through the milky tentacles, knocks him down, and swallows him despite the others' attacks. His death establishes the limit of a modification that had been decisive against peer acolytes. The surviving party displays only brief, superficial grief, and Roth is later named among the deaths used to accuse Leylin. (Chapters 111, 113, and 126)

Appearance and personality

Roth is a tall, broad western man with a simple, honest-looking expression. His transformed state is much less ordinary: white tentacles emerge from his right side and green scales spread over half his face. He is sociable toward a useful peer, calm around stronger companions, and careful enough to keep a dangerous modification hidden until combat requires it. His quick acceptance of the expedition's risks also shows confidence bordering on recklessness. (Chapters 104–110)

Magic, bloodline, and abilities

Level 3 acolyte

Roth has the spiritual force and general training of a newly advanced level 3 acolyte. The expedition nevertheless evaluates him below Bosain, Leylin, Jayden, and Shaya because he carries no demonstrated Magic Artifact and relies on a riskier bodily trump card. The corpus does not name a spell model or later advancement for him. (Chapters 104–105)

Controlled physical mutation

Roth has undergone an unusually thorough mutation experiment. Grey-white tentacles can unfold from his right side, while green scales appear across part of his face. The altered limbs provide enough reach and force to catch and decapitate a fleeing acolyte, and they function as climbing appendages over difficult terrain. He can retract them and return to a largely human appearance without losing his sanity, which Jayden recognises as successful containment of the physical transformation. (Chapters 107–108)

The method carries the risks typical of Roth's incomplete rank. Level 3 acolytes lack the spiritual force, ingredients, and knowledge available to official Magi, so forceful body enhancement can cause irreversible damage; the narration presents Roth's control as exceptional, not proof that the process is safe. Nor does mutation make him comparable to an official Magus-level creature. The Black Horrall Snake snaps the tentacles and kills him before the party can rescue him. (Chapters 107 and 111)
