Raynor
Biography
Aptitude without resources
Raynor travels toward Abyssal Bone Forest Academy as a fourth-grade acolyte prospect, an aptitude high enough to give the small boy visible pride and a favourable place in Kaliweir's group. He tries to preserve that status even among fellow newcomers, hanging back from conversations he wants to hear rather than appearing overeager. At the academy, however, talent does not replace currency. He cannot buy additional materials on credit and receives only the standard robes, badge, elementary meditation crystal, room key, and assignment to Gafrin. (Chapters 15–21)
Raynor's aptitude lets him meditate efficiently and advance to level 2, but a shortage of Magic Crystals prevents him from purchasing enough theory and spell information. He repeatedly fails basic lessons and cannot form a spell model. Leylin Farlier, a lower-aptitude peer with Potioneering income and A.I. Chip assistance, consequently moves ahead of him. Raynor's embarrassment is less evidence that fourth-grade aptitude failed than that advancement also depends on knowledge and resources. (Chapters 27–32)
The Red-Eyed Raven mission
Raynor joins Kaliweir's field party as a preparatory Knight who knows archery but no magic. He promises not to become a burden and works with Lilisse to delay a Red-Eyed Raven, handling the net while she occupies it and Kaliweir prepares a spell. This division of labour lets him contribute against a magical creature without pretending his mundane weapon can defeat it alone. (Chapters 31–33)
The mission collapses when a Violent Hilly Bear pursues the group. Raynor is the slowest member because the others have Knight speed, Nimble Grass, or enhancing potions, leaving him in the greatest danger. He escapes the bear but runs into a branch and impales his thigh, and his silence when the others thank Leylin suggests lingering pride or discomfort after being rescued. He nevertheless accepts treatment and agrees that Leylin deserves the largest share of the failed mission's proceeds. Raynor exchanges contact details and leaves the mission area; no later training, spell acquisition, or fate is established. (Chapters 34–36)
Appearance and personality
Raynor is a small, skinny boy with pride in his eyes. He is conscious of the prestige attached to aptitude and becomes embarrassed when poverty and failed lessons leave him behind a third-grade peer. That pride does not make him useless: he admits his lack of spells, describes the archery he can offer, obeys the field plan, and accepts a fairer distribution after Leylin saves the party. (Chapters 15–36)
Magic, bloodline, and abilities
Fourth-grade aptitude and meditation
Fourth-grade aptitude gives Raynor faster meditation than Leylin and supports his advancement to level 2 acolyte. Aptitude determines potential and training efficiency, not automatic mastery. He still needs Magic Crystals, theory courses, and a spell model; lacking those resources, he fails prerequisite lessons several times and never demonstrates a completed spell. His last source-grounded magical status remains level 2. (Chapters 21 and 27–32)
Preparatory Knight conditioning
Raynor has begun Knight training, giving him better physical conditioning than an untrained student, but he is not identified as a full Knight. His measured vitality is 2.5 and his other physical attributes remain below the members who escape the Violent Hilly Bear through full Knight strength or consumable speed boosts. He has no demonstrated secret technique or emergency enhancement, and the absence of such a trump card leaves him the slowest target. (Chapters 31–35)
Archery and field support
Raynor describes his archery as competent and carries a wooden bow. Against the Red-Eyed Ravens, however, he uses the party's net while Lilisse holds the creature and Kaliweir casts. The scene establishes basic ranged and team-combat training, not the ability to injure magical beasts independently; ordinary human weapons are explicitly inadequate against such creatures. (Chapters 32–33)
Relationships
- Leylin Farlier: Lower-aptitude peer whose faster practical progress unsettles Raynor.
- Kaliweir: Leader of Raynor's freshman clique and field group.
Items
- Academy issue: Acolyte robes, identity badge, room key, and a crystal ball containing elementary meditation. These are standard academy provisions rather than unique artifacts.
- Wooden bow and net: Mundane field equipment used during the Red-Eyed Raven mission. Neither is strong enough to replace spellcasting against magical creatures.
