Captured assassin

Mahnke wakes in Leylin Farlier's cellar after a failed ambush, with broken limbs, missing teeth, and a church emblem branded into his arm. The mark identifies him as a follower of Cyric, the God of Murder, but Leylin correctly argues that an ordinary failed believer cannot expect personal intervention from the god. Mahnke boasts about assassin training and resistance to torture, then confesses within three hours. His information exposes Viscount Tim's Black Tiger pirates, their numbers, their rank 10 leader, and their approach to Faulen Island. (Chapters 806 and 810)

Prisoner and sacrifice

Leylin preserves Mahnke as a rare high-ranked professional test subject. Under magical compulsion, Howard cuts off one of Mahnke's fingers with the Devilblood Dagger, allowing Leylin to measure how flesh from a professional strengthens an ordinary person. Mahnke recognises devil-related power and begs for immediate death rather than the profanation of his soul. Leylin then feeds Mahnke's body to the dagger, leaving a skeleton and using the absorbed force to help advance as a wizard. By the later confrontation with Cyric's church, Mahnke is described as a pile of bones. (Chapters 808–809 and 833)

Appearance and personality

Mahnke is a hardened underworld operative who begins his captivity defiant, mocking, and confident in his endurance. Leylin's interrogation rapidly reduces him to weeping submission. His faith does not make him fearless: the possibility that devil worshippers will profane his soul terrifies him more than physical torture or death. (Chapters 806–809)
