Lorent

Biography

Pursuit in the name of justice

Lorent leads a Church of Justice investigation into Leylin Farlier's suspected connection to the Pirates' Tide. A senior priest repeatedly reminds him that Leylin remains an aristocrat entitled to trial, but Lorent treats punishment as inevitable. His team traces false identities across hostile territory and destroys an ogre tribe encountered during the search, while still acknowledging that Leylin may have killed its leader in self-defence (Chapters 860–868).

The investigators eventually reach the imperial capital only to learn that the king has assigned responsibility to the barbarians and closed the case. With insufficient evidence and no church authority to continue against a noble, the official mission ends. Lorent shatters a boulder in anger and stays behind alone, hiding until Leylin leaves the capital so he can impose private judgment (Chapters 876–881).

Death outside the capital

Lorent ambushes Leylin's carriage with Smite Evil after it enters an isolated area. Leylin challenges the legality of the attack, but Lorent argues that corrupt law has become a shield for crime. A Hold Person spell creates a hesitation, and Tiff, disguised as the coachman, drives a cursed dagger through Lorent's defences. Devil worshippers and Delia then surround the party and kill his companions (Chapters 881–882).

Even wounded, Lorent's will and holy endurance require both a high-grade devil and a near-legendary opponent to crush him. His sword is lost and corrosive fire ruins his armour before Leylin drives the Devilblood Dagger into his forehead. The dagger consumes Lorent's remaining life force and shatters under the amount of energy extracted (Chapter 882).

Appearance and personality

Lorent wears full paladin armour and carries himself with radiant moral certainty. He is brave, disciplined, and capable of recognising facts that favour a suspect, but cannot accept an institutional outcome that contradicts his moral conclusion. Months of secret surveillance leave him haggard and bloodshot, turning lawful zeal into an attack outside his church's mandate.

Magic, bloodline, and abilities

Lorent is a high-level paladin with extraordinary willpower, vitality, resistance to disease and negative effects, divine healing, and powerful qi. Smite Evil projects a crescent of purifying force that is especially dangerous to devils, demons, and undead. Together with Divine Punishment, it channels holy light through his sword strongly enough to break an ogre warhammer and decapitate its wielder (Chapters 868, 881).

He can shatter a large boulder in anger and form translucent qi armour over his plate. These defences resist ordinary corruption, but they are not absolute: Hold Person delays him, Tiff's curse-bearing dagger penetrates his barrier, and concentrated attacks by stronger supernatural opponents overwhelm his healing and armour. His final defeat depends on an ambush and multiple attackers, not a simple loss to a lone wizard (Chapters 877, 881–882).
