Lancey

Biography

Crossing the deserts

Lancey is one of six official Magi travelling together across the Limestone Wasteland and Golden Desert. She is paired with Leylin Farlier for camp duties and feeds the borrowed Seated Lupin Wolves the specialised food needed to keep them fit as mounts. Her curiosity about a rare Brownstone Singer nearly leads her to touch it, but Leylin's warning prevents the parasite-like danger that afflicts another traveller. The incident makes her wary without stopping her from taking an active role in the journey. (Chapters 137–138)

After the group survives a Golden Giant, Lancey helps keep the exhausted Magi organised. She reminds them that the Golden Desert is more dangerous than the wasteland, worries about their inability to meditate while fleeing, and recognises that only a rank 2 Magus could directly overcome the giant. Her role is coordination rather than command; she works with the older guide and accepts practical contributions from newer Magi such as Leylin's concealment spell. (Chapters 138–141)

Scouting the Kary Vultures

At the Golden Oasis, Lancey uses a blue-gem Magic Artifact to survey the Kary Vulture flock from a distance. The image establishes that more than a hundred adult vultures and an official-Magus-level king occupy the route. Attempting a closer view lets the king sense the observation and shatter the remote image, forcing the group to hide. Lancey apologises, then continues helping prepare the ambush and relays the switch from Plan A to Plan B when the first approach fails. Her mistake increases immediate risk, but the reconnaissance gives the party the numbers and layout needed to plan. (Chapters 141–143)

Refusing recruitment

When the group is offered a new affiliation, Lancey and an older Magus reject it without hesitation while others waver. Her decision shows that she values independence and her existing path more than immediate factional protection. (Chapter 144)

Appearance and personality

Lancey is a provocatively dressed woman whose movements carry an impression of loneliness. She is direct, attentive to group safety, and comfortable caring for magical mounts. Curiosity can outrun caution, but she acknowledges errors without defensiveness and resumes her duties. Her immediate rejection of recruitment suggests private obligations or priorities, although the urgent matter behind her departure is never explained. (Chapters 137–144)

Magic, bloodline, and abilities

Official Magus

Lancey has the spiritual force, magic power, and field experience of a rank 1 official Magus. She can participate in prepared ambushes and survive prolonged travel through environments that exhaust the entire party. The corpus does not name a personal spell model, bloodline, elemental affinity, or later rank, so no signature combat magic can be attributed to her. (Chapters 137–144)

Blue-gem scouting artifact

Lancey's blue gem functions as a remote eye. After she wets it and chants an incantation, it projects a moving, mirror-like image of terrain within ten kilometres and can zoom toward a selected subject. This lets the group count the Kary Vultures and locate their king without entering the oasis. The surveillance is detectable by a sufficiently powerful target: the king senses the closer observation, attacks through the connection, and shatters the displayed image. Whether the gem itself is permanently destroyed is not stated. (Chapter 141)

Field coordination

Lancey evaluates travel risks, communicates plans through a secret imprint, and helps organise the party's response to the vulture flock. These are professional skills supported by the group's mounts, preparations, and shared communication methods, not a distinct magical power. Her knowledge of creatures is useful but incomplete, as shown by her initial response to the Brownstone Singer. (Chapters 137–143)
