Biography

Fighting-spirit instructor of Faulen House

Jacob is Faulen House's chief imperial bodyguard and the commander formerly responsible for the harbor patrol. Baron Jonas transfers him to the manor to teach the young Leylin Farlier martial arts, inviting Leylin to address him as “Uncle.” The menace Jacob carries from battles and killing confirms that he is more than a ceremonial guard: he is a Rank 6 Professional who can manifest Fighting Spirit and teach the discipline needed to become a ranked warrior. Jacob quickly recognizes Leylin's unusual physical potential. He predicts that persistent training could let the boy gather fighting energy and reach Rank 5 within ten years, then reports that assessment directly to Jonas. When wizard lessons take priority, Jacob's training time is reduced, but Leylin insists on retaining daily martial practice. Years later the pupil defeats the teacher cleanly while controlling the force of the blow, and Jacob helps conceal the full extent of Leylin's martial ability under the baron's orders. From bodyguard to trusted field officer

Jacob drives Leylin through Port Venus and answers detailed questions about patrol strength, armor, crossbows, and the number of trained Professionals. When assassins attack, Leylin sends him away to split the enemy group; Jacob returns to find every attacker subdued, including enemies whose combined strike he believes he could not have survived. That result changes his loyalty from ordinary household duty into personal submission to the heir whose strength he has witnessed. (Chapters 801–805)

During the Black Tiger campaign Jacob gathers the manor and port guards, reports the meager equipment available, and accepts command of the encirclement while Leylin and Isabel confront the strongest opponents. He brings crossbows and reinforcements to secure the captured pirate camp, transports the mutilated pirate leader Steve under guard, and shares the soldiers' pride when the victory is presented to Jonas. Jacob understands that he is not the army's strongest combatant; his responsibility is to keep its ordinary fighters organized around the few exceptional Professionals. (Chapters 806–815)

Leylin subsequently entrusts him with estate intelligence, merchant arrangements, slave acquisition, food processing, and settlement construction. Jacob converts instructions for sugar and preserved fish into actual supply channels and supervises the labor left behind when Leylin departs. His role broadens from one family's sword to an administrator helping create Port Venus's economy. (Chapters 817–818)

Defender and administrator of Port Venus

While Leylin is away, Jacob patrols the growing settlement and prepares to defend Faulen Island when an unknown fleet appears. Though he believes the force may be large enough to conquer the island, he rallies the guards to hold their ground until Leylin's arrival reveals it as a returning allied fleet. Jacob then reports on production and the long shelf life achieved for fish floss, evidence that the experimental settlement has become a viable trade center. (Chapters 837–838)

Port Venus's prosperity attracts stronger Professionals who could replace him. Rather than rely solely on seniority, Jacob spends his increased salary on scholars and experienced warriors, advancing from Rank 6 to the peak of Rank 7 and nearing Rank 8. He continues managing intelligence, visitors, industrial security, and the many armed specialists around the port. His later progress is earned through renewed training and access to teachers, not through a divine or magical shortcut. (Chapters 839–840)

When Leylin returns after many years, Jacob and Leon have aged and are approaching retirement. Jacob remains emotionally loyal and is greeted with gifts and thanks rather than discarded as stronger retainers arrive. His ending position is therefore not that of an obsolete fighter, but of an old household servant whose teaching, battlefield service, and administration helped bridge Faulen House's rise from a minor island barony to a much larger power. Appearance and personality

Jacob has the sturdy build and menacing aura of a veteran who has passed through repeated killing. He wears practical leather or chainmail armor on duty and grows visibly older by Leylin's return. His physical presence can intimidate ordinary enemies, but he is humble before the family he serves.

He is observant, disciplined, and discreet. Jacob reports Leylin's potential without exaggerating his own contribution, obeys sudden battlefield orders without creating panic, and conceals the heir's martial training when instructed. Prosperity makes him anxious about being surpassed, yet his answer is self-improvement rather than sabotage. His loyalty remains directed toward both Jonas's household and Leylin personally.

Magic, bloodline, and abilities

Warrior rank and Fighting Spirit

Jacob is introduced as a Rank 6 warrior and later advances to the peak of Rank 7. Professionals begin receiving special recognition at Rank 5, when warriors can manifest Fighting Spirit. Jacob coats his hand in that energy and drives a fist into the ground strongly enough to leave a large crater; Leylin estimates the destructive output as comparable to a Knight using internal life energy and the overall threat as approaching a Rank 1 Magus under the World of Gods' restrictive laws. Fighting Spirit reinforces Jacob's physical strikes but does not make him resistant to every supernatural effect. Leylin estimates that a Rank 1 Charm Person spell could still disorient him briefly, even if it would not control him as easily as an ordinary person. Jacob is also outmatched by assassins near or above Rank 5 acting in a coordinated ambush, and by the increasingly high-ranked wizards and Professionals drawn to Port Venus. (Chapters 804–808, 839)

Martial instruction and weapon skill

Jacob can evaluate a student's energy flow, physique, and likely progression, then teach conditioning and weapon fundamentals. His program begins with endurance training rather than spectacular techniques, reflecting the physical foundation required before a warrior gathers Fighting Spirit. He spars with Leylin using metal swords and recognizes defeat without excuses once the student surpasses him. (Chapters 792–795)

His own combat experience includes bodyguard work, patrol command, adventuring, carriage handling under threat, and prisoner security. The corpus does not name a signature combat class, bloodline, divine blessing, or unique technique beyond Fighting Spirit, so these practical competencies should not be recast as magical abilities. Conventional weapons and armor support them but do not transform his rank. (Chapters 801–815)

Patrol command and estate logistics

Jacob knows Faulen Island's available troops, equipment, harbor vulnerabilities, and criminal threats. He can gather dispersed guards, organize an encirclement, control ships and escape routes, and move reserves to exploit a victory won by stronger fighters. Later he applies the same discipline to settlement security, industrial secrecy, incoming fleets, and visiting dignitaries. (Chapters 802–840)

He also manages merchant channels, labor, fishing boats, food production, and local reports. This professional and administrative growth is important because Jacob's battlefield ceiling is modest beside Leylin's: he remains useful by turning strategic instructions into sustained institutions. His access to Faulen funds lets him hire teachers and advance toward Rank 8, but no completed Rank 8 breakthrough is recorded. (Chapters 817–840)
