Helen
Biography
Survivor of an arcanist line
Helen Carter is a half-elf descended from survivors of ancient Netheril. Church persecution has damaged her family's inheritance so severely that, despite being a rank 11 wizard, Arcane Fire is the only genuine arcane spell model she knows. After Leylin Farlier rescues her from werecreatures, she recognizes that he is both beyond her power and connected to the same forbidden tradition. She therefore trades her ancestral notes and guidance to the ruins for protection and a chance to recover knowledge her family could not preserve alone. (Chapters 900–910)
The hidden laboratory
Helen identifies the twisted rune beneath a red dragon's lair and guides Leylin to an arcanist pocket dimension. Inside, she can reproduce basic protective wizardry and interpret fragments from her ancestor's notebook, but an ancient golem forces her to flee with a high-grade beast-skin scroll rather than fight it. A hostile remnant later copies her soul signature and appearance, creating a duplicate whose corrosive rain and distortion are powers of the laboratory's influence, not abilities demonstrated by the original Helen. The genuine Helen survives but loses control of the scroll during the confusion. (Chapters 911–915)
A hundred-year oath
Leylin verifies the real Helen by requiring a soul oath witnessed by the Styx. She agrees to a hundred years of loyalty, giving him both an arcanist subordinate and confirmation that the surviving woman is not the laboratory's imitation. (Chapter 915)
Appearance and personality
Helen is a beautiful half-elf with a slender figure and pointed ears. She is sincere about preserving Netheril's legacy, cautious around power, and pragmatic enough to accept service when her life is controlled by a stronger wizard.
Magic, bloodline, and abilities
Wizard spellcasting
Helen is a rank 11 wizard capable of standard Weave-based magic. She applies an Endurance spell before entering the unstable pocket dimension and launches multiple large fireballs against a red dragon, demonstrating protection and destructive evocation at her professional level. She remains far below legendary combatants: she cannot meaningfully confront the laboratory's ancient golem and depends on Leylin and Tiff when threats exceed ordinary high-ranked wizardry. (Chapters 911–912)
Arcane Fire and Netheril knowledge
Arcane Fire is the sole intact arcane spell model in Helen's damaged family inheritance. Unlike ordinary wizard spells, it represents magic performed without depending on the Weave, and it serves as proof that her lineage genuinely descends from Netheril's arcanists. Her theoretical knowledge also lets her locate inherited runes and discuss pocket dimensions, but fragmented notes leave major gaps. She guides Leylin to a lost database; she does not personally possess the many arcane arts he retrieves there. (Chapters 900–913)
Oath and external artifacts
Helen's ancestor's notebook supplies directions and partial theory, her bag of holding carries equipment, and the black beast-skin scroll radiates power unlike an ordinary enchanted item. None is an innate half-elven ability, and the corpus does not show Helen safely activating the scroll. Her hundred-year Styx oath is also a binding contract rather than a combat spell: resonance with the river authenticates her soul and makes the promise difficult to falsify, which is why Leylin uses it to distinguish her from the laboratory's imitation. (Chapters 912–915)
